That reminds me Clinton Cool of a story a lady boater told me several years ago. She'd left her wreck of an old car by the King's Head pub on Atherstone locks and several days later, cycled back to move the car to her next mooring. The car roof had been flattened to below seat height by people jumping up and down on it (from the footprints on the roof). The car was written off by the insurance. Wrong place, wrong time ... we've always found Atherstone a great place to moor. Rog Wrong place, more especially. The next day we had a match, I was keeper for a local pub team. Our centre forward's car had gone missing overnight. Arrived at our home ground in Wythenshawe, Manchester. There was his car, burned out having been driven into and destroyed a goal post.

This is my personal tally of crime from 20 years of living around Manchester:
Set on and beaten in the street by gangs of youths for no reason 2 Motorbikes stolen 2 Attempted house break ins 4 Successful house break ins 2 Car window smashed stereo stolen 6 Car stolen 1 Car vandalised 2 Van stolen 1 Set on at taxi rank, shoes stolen 1
Total 21
This excludes a number of fracas/ brawls in pubs, none of which I started.

I should add: Property returned to me/ convictions for crimes reported to the police: 0
I missed one off, more recently: youth threw a half brick at me as I paddled under a bridge. He missed.

I seem to remember it was Moomin Papa (Simon) from CWDF who travelled on the Caldon through Stoke and, as it was raining, moored opposite a railway line embankment which appeared to be in countryside. He wasn't aware there was a council housing estate behind the embankment, and shortly after mooring began to be heavily stoned by youths. As they would have an inexhaustible supply of missiles on the lines, he decided to move ... he was hit in the face with a stone causing injury and breaking his glasses. It's the only really unpleasant boating story I have heard directly from the guy experiencing it ... whilst it was simply wrong place, wrong time I certainly think it is worth getting beyond Engine lock as Mr Stabby suggests. The incident was several years ago (7 to 10 ?) and isn't typical ... I don't mean to put you off the canal. Rog www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/topic/66887-when-bandits-attack/

Can anybody explain what a picture of London has to do with Manchester? It's clearly not Manchester. When they set up a scheme for rental bikes like the one in the picture they were all either stolen or vandalised, the scheme was scrapped.

Yes, I remembered it as I joined Canalworld in 2013. 2015 was the June we went north through 'Stoke-on-Trent' (whatever it is, as it's 6 towns attached, right?) and people on the towpath seemed quite pleasant. We came south through SOT (railway station's code) July 2018 - all very pleasant. I have a warm feeling for Stoke, not sure why; Manchester is a bit grotty but we have criss-crossed the region and no problems. If it does get out of hand, just nuke it (Manchester, not Stoke).

Although in favour of cycling, this is one 'social experiment' I strongly disagree with - 'free' bikes that just get abused, vandalised, and thrown in canals/rivers. Buy your own bike, or rent one from a place that requires a hefty deposit such as wot car rental firms want.

Buy your own bike, or rent one from a place that requires a hefty deposit such as wot car rental firms want. Yes but that would exclude all the poor people who are in receipt of benefits. By the time they've paid for all their 'essentials' there's no money left to pay the rent, never mind renting or buying a bike.
