NASA gets woke: Space agency is ridiculed for dropping 'Eskimo Nebula' and 'Siamese Twins Galaxy' names for celestial phenomena because they are 'harmful' NASA announced this week that it is reevaluating nicknames for cosmic objects 'It has become clear that certain cosmic nicknames are not only insensitive, but can be actively harmful,' the agency said in a statement A planetary nebula discovered more than 300 years ago will no longer be called the 'Eskimo Nebula' because of the moniker's 'colonial' implications A pair of orbiting galaxies will no longer be referred to as the 'Siamese Twins Galaxy' because that name was also deemed offensive Many critics decried the decision to scrap the nicknames, accusing NASA of bowing to 'woke culture' www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8607127/NASA-ridiculed-dropping-Eskimo-Nebula-Siamese-Twins-Galaxy-nicknames.html

Personally I find it unsurprising so many have lately got the hump:
A man who had his car window smashed by police when he was driving home from an interview about “racially motivated” stop-and-searches has demanded to be reimbursed for repairs after a police standards investigation ruled it was unacceptable for officers to have returned his vehicle full of shards of glass.
The incident gained widespread attention after Ryan Colaço, 30, from east London, posted a video on social media of the search by City of London police officers. He was dragged from his car, handcuffed, taken into custody, strip searched, held overnight and released at 5am, then made to wait four hours for his car to be returned.
This incident came just days after he was also stopped and searched by Metropolitan police officers. Drugs were found on neither occasion.
Colaço said he had been searched about 20 times, but did not have a criminal record, adding: “It is very traumatic to drive now and I am only using my car if extremely necessary. It is not fair to taint people of colour for driving BMW vehicles.”
In an accompanying letter, the City of London force added: “We aim to provide an exceptional policing service and I am sorry that you have had cause to complain to us about your dissatisfaction with the service you received.
“Having considered the investigating officer’s report, I have concluded that the level of service provided to you by the police service was acceptable in all but one allegation.”
I just love that last sentence. It reminds me of the script of Terry Gilliam's 'Brazil'.

It's OK. Cultural appropriation is only a 'crime' if the 'cultural theft' is by a white person, from a black person. For example, if a white person has their hair braided, Bob Marley style. It's perfectly acceptable for black women to smooth their hair and/ or dye it blonde in order to look more like white girls.

Was it Michael Bolton who did the song "we all need somebody to kneel on"?
May have been someone else.

So the Welsh aren’t a separate race of people? Late, I know. But I don't think they are a different race to us as in they are white European too. Eta.i just noticed the date, very late. Sorry.

Why don't you give it a rest, you senile old wankpuffin? He has got a point though to be fair. If CRT can persuade the DEFRA man that they do not need to dredge the waterway anymore due to nobody using it on reasonably deep boats then it is a slippery slope towards completely unuseable waterways. I don't think that is what will happen but I can see the logic behind the belief that it will. What will probably happen in reality is that over consumption of coal, mobile phones and glass products will cause massive increase in global temperatures and UK inland waterways will become less important because nobody has any food to eat any more.

Back to the original topic It's getting rather silly now !! www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53715814BBC slapped for using the word "nigger" in a non offensive context. What is going on here? "More than 18,600 people complained after the N-word was used in full..." That's a bit odd. I would not have thought that you could use it other than the full word. I suppose you could say "nig nog" but other than that it is a word and yes it is offensive to some but "in full" seems a strange way of describing it.

You mean like how the narrow canals ceased to be used? Yes. Nobody with any sense does narrow boating these days as none of the locks work, there is no water in the cut and worst of all the boats are too narrow. Its disgraceful considering how widely used narrow canals were up to about 8 or 9 years ago.
