I knew what he was talking about by post #5.
However in the case of the second stud then if the nut won't come off the stud and instead the stud unscrews from the aluminium engine casing then the stud is effectively a bolt in all but name.
There will be no way of knowing which of these two things would happen without having a grip on the nut itself which is why I would just cut the stud(s) off below the flange and replace them.
Slightly more likely to have a hacksaw in the arsenal than facility to modify tools or practicality of buying other tools specifically for the job.
Cut the things off and remove the remaining studs either with a stud remover (improbable that this would be carried) or perhaps mole grips and a bit of heat.
ETA of course this brings up the problem of sourcing replacement studs which may be as thorny as or more thorny than the issue of getting the right tool for the job in the first place. not that a first place exists any more in reality.

Jesus - 4 pages for one nut!
quick look on google reveals a box spanner is the likeliest thing to shift it. If the box spanner is too long it can easily be modified with the use of an angle grinder and a slitting disc to make it less long. Think yourself lucky it’s not a multi cylinder engine prone to stripping the threads for the exhaust studs in the hands of imbeciles - I’ve put right a 600 Thundercat and a ZX6R after they were attacked by their ham fisted owner’s trying to fit aftermarket exhausts. ... yes, but - - think how very many pages (more than 4 for one nut, I'm sure!) have been given over to an Essex bus driver living in Finnish land with a boat awash with clean oil and full of photographs of strange foodstuffs which is currently languishing listless and lifeless in a marina on the K&A...? Think yourself lucky, indeed xx Remember, folks - there is ALWAYS someone worse off x

It's amazing the lengths some people will go to in order to change engine oil.

Just to rub salt in the wound - This week I’ve changed the engine oil on a BMC and a Perkins, Gearbox oil on a TMP & Borg Warner velvet drive along with the gear case on a Yamaha 28hp outboard - and for good measure I will round the week out doing a little service on a Ford 1.6 diesel. Getting on for 20l of oil changed to your 0 👍 Nevermind the fact we have managed to get a bit of water slipping under the keel of the boat this dreadful year 🍻😜

It's amazing the lengths some people will go to in order to change engine oil. What? Like jumping on a plane in the midst of a global pandemic? I know someone that has just purchased a boat with a low hours but unloved Perkins 6.354 - last oil change 3+ years ago. Runs fine and hasn’t shit itself on the couple of occasions it has recently been run. That said the Mechanical equivalent of a food aid parcel will be winging its way to Peterborough to put the situation right 👍👌

Anyway, upon opening e-mails, marina owner may be starting our engine soon, and if it has a run of, say, 20 minutes, it might be OK for another 2 months - until Christmas. Finnish government reviewing the UK situation this weekend, and my boss was glowering at me when I mentioned I might nip over to England as she doesn't fancy me being in quarantine for 2 weeks on return. Apparently the government pays your wages whilst you are in quarantine (as it's their demand), but these buses don't drive themselves. Quarantine from the UK is 'recommended' which, in practice, means nothing, as it is not supervised and it's not obligatory. No-one is wearing masks up here (only for a laugh), no-one has been wearing masks or taking social distancing seriously since March, the streets are not lined with the dead, and there are no zombies traipsing through the woods. The virus is a hoax, and you are angry because it is embarrassing to be had over by the likes of Cummings, Jenrick, and the stupidly named Baroness Dildo.

Sorry, Ross - I do empathise - it really can't be great being away from your boat for so very long. However, I am a great believer in "what goes around comes around". Keep safe and well - with love from the much vilified and derided "daft old bat" x
