I will say this for the pro boat mover with whom I went down the braunston flight this morning- he always went slow past moored boats. Make no mistake- this guy was keen. He would wind up and close paddles faster than anyone I've seen, jog ahead and get the next lock ready to minimise delay- basically anything he could reasonably do to speed up our passage through. He went ahead to help oncoming boaters through quicker, and was told off by a woman who was coming up through our next lock when he tried to open the top gate a tad, before her husband was fully across it! What he was actually doing was opening it just fractionally so that it wouldn't get stuck, apparently- but she mistook his help for an attempt to cause the manslaughter of her elderly husband. I said a tearful farewell to my new lock buddy as we left the last lock, and he went off first, but he always kept it slow past the very long lines of moored boats around braunston and then on the Oxford canal. So it seems the pro boat movers also respect the tradition of slowing for moored boats. I'm still not sure if all working boats do though. So - you got lucky again!! Well done - seems you are leading a charmed life! Re: your comments about working boats - the real, genuine, proper working boats will never disturb/displace/offend your boat in any way - they're on your side and want your custom, after all (but seriously, whilst many are on a mission, they are respectful). Sadly, you are currently in the land of the "pretend working boats" aka posers with attitude - had one actually BEND a piling hook once as he hurtled past - with the usual cry ............. Never mind, roll on October. Take care x Yes, you could certainly tell you were in the heart of the waterways around Braunston. Trad and working boats everywhere. Those folks certainly love a trad, and all the trimmings- cowboy hat, cowboy style rain cape thing, inscrutable 1000 yard stare- the lot. Btw, not a trad thing but I've noticed not all boaters say hello with same enthusiasm. I get the impression that some of them would rather it wasn't a thing at all, but its so established they kind of have no choice. But they make their reluctance fairly clear. I'm afraid I just smile all the wider at the miserable ones, and make a great show of waving and hello-ing. I feel I need a response, and I will go to great lengths to extract it. I kind of wanted to stop and have a look around as the place is so famous, and maybe waste some money on boating fripperies in the chandlery, but there were very few free mooring spots, and I thought I might as well get a few more miles under my belt before evening. I ended up just short of Hillmorton locks. I was going to go through them as I got here before 5pm, but this spot looked pretty safe and it had started drizzling, so I pulled over for what is referred to in today's middle management circles as a comfort break, which turned into an overnight stop when I saw an elderly couple moor up a little further on. If the older folks are happy with it, I reckon that's a good sign a mooring is safe enough. I've got one more moving day so its through the Hillmorton locks at the crack of 10am tomorrow (have to give the volunteers time to turn up), a bit of Tesco luxury shopping, a smidgeon of water, then out into the sticks again to moor up for a few days work. Its a great plan, but we shall see if it works out!

I got my crane hooks at a scrap yard.
I was not aware that being a ccer meant you could not use eBay.

No date yet. When I saw the quack it was a Tuesday she said "two or three weeks" so I guess I'll get a letter next week hopefully. I think she means "When they've finished their latest TikTok video".

Braunston is worth a stop for a wander round the village(& the graveyard if it's open at the mo').There's also a fab butcher there.Couple of decent pubs & a chippy too.

It was a while ago though.

I moored by the golf course near there on my first trip up that way in 1994. Near the old viaduct which goes across the golf course.
A very funny event occurred. A couple of golfers came through the hedge and were looking around. I got out of boat and asked them if they were ok.
One of them had accidentally let go of a club and it ended up in the canal.
I said "I'll find it with the magnet" they looked at me like I was a nutter and said 'ok £20 if you do" and disappeared back onto the golf course.
I think they were a bit surprised when this long haired well spoken youth with a mongrel whippet turned up chasing them along the 10th with a Ping 7 iron.
Funny days.
That club was more than £20 worth but I'm a kind fellow.

But £20 for using your magnet is not bad money.

Occasionally I shout at some pillock on a speed boat or a bloody jetski
The last one was somebody with a new inflateable and outboard, backwards and forwards again and again ..... just trying out I think.
When I shouted he came back and slowed to a tickover so he could hear me.
because of that I was polite, I said "go a couple of hundred yards upstream where there are no moored boats and you can bugger about as much as you want without annoying anyone"
Good as gold, he said ok and did.

Have to he honest,so many boats which don't slow down.So many folk who only bother with their own boats at locks. So many folk who moor like twats.Thank goodness for those who do slow, thank goodness for those who come & help(including the beardy guy yesterday who was chuffed when I said his beard made ZZ Top look like teenagers)and lastly-a very helpful guy called Vince(anyone know him ?)who sorted us into a shady mooring.

Just remember, a bad day on a boat beats a good day on land I find the best thing to do is do your own thing. I smile and wave to everyone, help at locks, slow down passing moorings, and try not to worry about what others do ... I do these things cos I enjoy doing them . Some ignore me, only work their own boat at locks, and generally rush about ... their choice and it doesn't alter what I do. Rog

Sadly this ignorance has become the norm. You've obviously been missing out for a while, Trina! However, there ARE still some lovely people/boaters about - not many, I have to agree, but ............

It's also becoming apparent that the more expensive your boat, dog and hat - seemingly the more dismissive, ignorant and downright miserable you have to be.
