I'm glad I'm not a shiny boater ..... must be bloody hard work trying to look superior all the time Wait until you finally see mine (I am a bit ashamed of this one, though - but circumstances and life and ......yet, I'm still floating and boating).

Have to he honest,so many boats which don't slow down.So many folk who only bother with their own boats at locks. So many folk who moor like twats.Thank goodness for those who do slow, thank goodness for those who come & help(including the beardy guy yesterday who was chuffed when I said his beard made ZZ Top look like teenagers)and lastly-a very helpful guy called Vince(anyone know him ?)who sorted us into a shady mooring. Sadly this ignorance has become the norm. You've obviously been missing out for a while, Trina! However, there ARE still some lovely people/boaters about - not many, I have to agree, but ............ Not missing for too long Met,just hoping that the ignorance wasn't becoming the norm.We seem to meet the 2 extremities-folk who are lovely & help in the old style way, including waiting for a thumbs up before a paddle is cracked-then those who sit on their boat & ignore the world at a lock. * Boat off our mooring totally ignored the folk at Hack Green-including Paul who went up to help folk through. It was weird as they've spoken to us in the marina, but totally blanked us & all the other boaters.🤨

Agree with you about own boats at locks and twattish mooring (“oooh look, there’s a great big space, let’s moor right in the middle so no-one else can get in). The former I suppose is only a mild irritation but spoils the ethos of the cut. The latter can be damned annoying! But I just don’t get the “don’t slow down” bit. It’s just not something that affects us. Most people slow down, those that don’t slow down were already going quite slow. Even those very very few who pass us “rather fast” don’t have any impact on us. I struggle to understand what the problem is.

To be honest Trina, this thumbs up thing is a modern invention, maybe in the last 15 years or so. As far as I am concerned if you drive into a lock and the gates are closed, what do you expect to happen next? What need is there for a thumbs up? If the helmsman is looking relaxed, hasn’t fallen off the back etc, why not just go for it? In my day, whilst we did of course look to see that all was in order on the boat before opening a paddle, we didn’t need someone else to give permission for the obvious and inevitable to happen. Again, I don’t really get it, although I accept that it is unfortunately becoming expected. We certainly never ever do it between Jeff and me (whoever is driving/locking) because it’s pointless.

However there are those who do take things to extremes.

You're right Trina - it really does seem to be one or another. Had a lovely run up Fradley where we all joined in (bar one miserable old single hander who assumed it was his right to push in and demand all the "ladies" do everything for him when I tied up at that one where only one boat can and waved him on .... thinking he might struggle to hold it/tie up.....). Never even got off his boat to lift a paddle/open or shut a gate.... Suffice to say the "ladies" mustered and were horrified to think I'd given up my lock for him AND helped him up, after which I had a very easy run .... thanked them all and still managed to help them. It's amazing how verrrrrrrry long it can take me to work a lock when they all "sky gaze" on the end of their ropes - and if still no-one makes an appearance as I'm leaving I even stop to shut the gate too!!

I prefer the unknown bod to know I'm ready as I've had vollies(think you know about them)start cracking paddles before I've settled in a lock.My boat=my call.I don't want peeps sorting my lock til I'm ready for them.

Talking about slowing down,we are always moored for the least impact from speeding. What does surprise me is how many boats just don't slow down at all.We slow down going past moored boats, but seem to be in the minority.I know smart arses say speeding boats shouldn't impact well moored boats, but to me that's not the point-slow down !

But what I don’t get is what is there to be ready for? What is there to settle? Genuine question, I’m not being awkward. Going down, surely absolutely nothing? Going up in say a T&M lock (lots of forward suction) yes I want the stern to be pretty close to the bottom gate and I suppose if I’ve come in too fast / not engaged reverse soon enough, and ended up too far forward I might not want top paddles opened the instant the bottom gates are closed, but it’s never been an issue except for one time (in 50 years) I’d disappeared inside momentarily, top paddles were opened before I’d popped out again and nearly got rudder/fender trapped in the bottom gates which were partially open. That was my fault for disappearing at a critical moment and the paddle opener’s fault for not noticing there was no-one on the back! Generally my beef is people not getting on with it!

Just remember, a bad day on a boat beats a good day on land Not if someone's just stolen it, eh Rog?

The vollie at Fradley beneath the service moorings is truly strange.... ....let me open the gates, climb the ladder and shut one gate before "popping up" from under the bridge to shut the other then whacked a paddle up so fast it took the skin off my palms as I was holding the boat on the centreline. I didn't swear, but I never said thank you.......

Surely it depends how fast they were going in the first place? On our recent visit to Stratford I did notice a few boats didn’t slow down as they passed, but they were already going pretty slowly and had no impact on us.

Met a lovely couple out of your marina who insisted on helping me up a lock last week - then the lady remembered me and even my name!! They helped me up Cox Bank years ago ....
