We've been to shops/industrial estates in Ellesmere,Oswestry,Whitchurch,Nantwich & Market Drayton-we've been sorting stuff for the house refurb plus dentist visiting.Nowhere has been busy, there have been no queues(even went to the tip which was verrrry quiet).Everywhere has felt safe & far more quiet than normally at this time of year. We've ordered from our local butcher & bakery/deli for Christmas & have been told collection can be any time-was expecting a time slot.

you may laugh at this but (ahem) the Good News Bible I found in a box of stuff from mum... parables etc are just as valid today as ever... certainly more use than the daily mail! This is another good example of how we seem to live in a polarised world. There is some good advice in the Bible (especially the New Testiment) but it's all too easy to accuse someone as being a 'religious nutter' just because they quote some of it or find some of it helpful. There is a bit of good and bad in everything, maybe even the Daily Mail..

I do like the way people cherry pick from the bible, it also instructs stoning to death for things like blasphemy and promiscuity, which for the avoidance of doubt I do NOT think is good advice.

Overall I think the New Testament does a reasonable job of trying to give advice about how to live a caring life - just don't take it as gospel or use it to support your prejudiced views.
As for the Old Testament - fit for the bin about 1000 years ago.

Not in the New Testament (I see @blacksheep beat me to it)
The 'government' are happy with more than an 80% compliance with imposed restrictions ... and yet we are told further lock-downs may be necessary.
Clearly closing the hospitality industry (one of the poorest paid) hasn't had that much effect.
It is what it is ... who knows what's for the best.

Even when reading theology, I could never get to grips with the old testament... all this "noah who was 984 years old and had 243 children rubbish"... it's like an acid trip - allegedly.
ETA I'm happy to dip i and out of the new one ... selectively taking on board "humanity" rather than "Christianity" per say.

I am always struck, when reading on a range of religions, how the basic message is very similar.

Religion offends me, religions are not the source of common sense and decency however often they claim to be, they are a simple tool using that as a backbone for all the other crap they spout.

It's a good job we have the ability to 'cherry pick' the good from people, otherwise we'd never be able to forgive eachother when we make mistakes. BTW, I struggle with the Old Testiment too in places, which is why I cherry pick the New Testiment.

If we just tried to love eachother, that would be a start.

Religion offends me, religions are not the source of common sense and decency however often they claim to be, they are a simple tool using that as a backbone for all the other crap they spout. I am profoundly without religion, but am not blind to the fundamental message they all seem to espouse . The idea that all life is precious ... that only by mutual support can we thrive ... love can move mountains ... the cycle of life and death etc Even pagan beliefs accept this concept of striving to be unified, at peace and 'one with the world'. These are positive messages ... that people may use religions to excuse their acts of bigotry, cruelty and prejudice doesn't alter the truth of the basic message in my view. A bit serious for a Saturday morning, but I just wished to explain myself Rog

I often ponder religion of an evening.
I think to myself "Everyone has to believe in something. I believe I will have another beer".

Sorry, Quaysider, I was not laffin at anyone who wants to read The Bible according to King James as wot I was brought to hear about on a Sunday morning, in the days when Sunday School was the only gig in town. That was all thrown out out the window when other entertainments became available. Parables and all that, at the age of eight are pretty much just stories, and do not resemble real life.
Did God decide it was better for some kiddies to have an easy life, and others not? It's a ridiculous idea. Anyway, best not to steal, best not to wreak vengence, best not to chop off people's heads.
I've made up my mind there is no Supreme Being, I realise that upsets some people, but they need to get over it, and not bring up the subject when I have not 'engaged' in their conversation.
