The levels within Goole have dropped a further 8inch overnight. There must be some leaky gates. π The gates on Victoria Lock and Ocean Lock are nothing to write home about in the water retaining stakes, . . but with the river Aire at Ferrybridge normally supplying enough water, and more, to cancel out the leakage via the canal, that isn't a problem. I don't know what the back-pumping capacity is at Goole these days, but ABP will certainly be passing on the electricity bill. What's the bed like under your boat, Joe, . . will she sit down reasonably level and upright ?

Itβs time for Canal and river Trust to be nationalised again. With itβs present leadership, the Trust is failing rapidly. As far as Iβm concerned, the whole issue is that of not being answerable to anyone. Under its present leadership, the Trust is a danger to the public, and mpβs need to recognise this and address the problem.
Getting rid of experienced canal staff and replacing them with marketing office staff, what a fucking joke.

There's a few narrowboats having problems so we've been lending a hand. We've just heard that the CRT are saying it could be a week. The promised helicopters haven't started work yet due to weather/visibility issues.

I know exactly where it is now having been up and down that stretch more times than I care to think about. I feel sorry for all those people that are going to have their homes ruined. fingers crossed it gets fixed soon its a big stretch of water to empty, its not like those muddy ditches down south this is a big waterway and its supposed to be deep!

Could this be the last straw and C&RT's swan song? Do they have enough money after all the profligate spending on nonessentials?

Lot of work going on there today, there are two tugs and a couple of pans, umpteen lorries, bags of boulders, dozens of one ton bags of ballast etc etc etc There have just been over 40 photos put up on a fb site. This time they really seem to have got their fingers out although there seems to be quite a lot of Environment Agency kit and "speedy hire" at least one of the tugs and pan was CRT. It does looks promising for a quick resolution.

The MP for the area Andrew Percy has been pretty critical of the CRT. He has had great difficulty getting information and updates from them. While the other agencies involved, the EA, Drainage Boards, Humberside Fire & Rescue, and Local Councils, have been excellent with their communications.

CRT must be too busy chasing Tony to worry about a leak all those many miles away.

There's a culvert under the canal right next to where that hole is, . . it's a sizeable land drain for the area that's flooded now, and the culvert carries it to a pumping station on Dutch River about a hundred yards away. There have been leaks there in times past, which is why that Larssen piling was driven next to and inside of where the original waterway walls were. If that culvert has collapsed, or even partially collapsed, then it's not going to be a quick job to fix. Not an immediately obvious connection, but years of mud and silt build up - going back to the latter days of BW - on the inside of that bend just on the Knottingley side of the breach forced loaded Westbound 180'(+) long 500 and 600 ton barges to always take a very wide course round there with the stern passing very close to the piling - sometimes only inches away - and the prop backwash blasting out the canal bed right where that hole has now appeared. The timing of the breach may or may not be significant, but the minor increase in barge traffic over the last few weeks could well have caused that final bit of extra canal bed erosion adjacent to that piling and led to the breach. If that is so then the root cause of this breach is the initial BW inattention to routine maintenance spot dredging during their latter years, followed by C&RT's eight and a half years of total inattention to anything, . . including regular inspections and checks by competent experienced lengthsmen who can recognize the signs of imminent structural failures BEFORE they happen.

Where's Debs when there's important stuff to report back, like how to manage a waterway. Are you paying attention lass?
