Then why on earth start a philistine philosophy thread... ...fair play. You got me there. Then again, doesn't philosophy cover all bases? I bet there isn't one philosopher in SAGE! I'm willing if the chance arose...no fee...no shares... I personally know (well I did) know one of the members of SAGE that appears on your screen often (no not the one with the weird eyebrows). Privately he used to be (and I suspect still is) quite philosophical.
Much more to science than yes or no... (even if the numpty scientists disagree).

Well, maybe there is hope then.

Yes can’t disagree. I really pisses me off when someone comes on the tv and says they have 30 grandchildren, as happened the other day. Lots of cooing from the presenters, no one said “selfish bitch, don’t you realise humans are killing the planet”. I look forward to the day when admitting to having more than a couple of children is seen as socially unacceptable. Have you got any kids Nick? (well one's you know about). ;-) Good grief of course not. I have never given my sperm to any woman. It is far too precious.

I was just randomly thinking (as I do normally), I wonder whether the outside of our brain really did get too big? I mean, I watch the ducks, sheep etc, and they seem pretty content most of the time. Even monkeys look content grooming eachother. Then many of us drink or take drugs to dumb the outer brain down a bit to give ourselves some peace. Is 'intellegence' really going to save the planet? After all it has coped for billions of years without us.... I'm not sure that's why many of us drink or take drugs ... 'peace' can be found without either. For my part (no drugs) I drink sometimes because I like it. Maybe my small brain is an advantage Rog

It just happens, through chance, to be a legal and socially acceptable one.

'drink' generally refers to alcoholic beverages, and 'drugs' generally refers to pharmaceuticals. Rog

The virtue is in the eye of the beholder apparently Telemachus ... I was factually proclaiming my vice of choice was alcohol ... but for occasional use, and for pleasure not reliance. My point, as I'm sure you are aware, was that the stimulants of choice are not essential to finding peace in all cases. Rog

Tell him Nick! I don't drink but I smoke the odd bifta...because in Rog's words I like it. I could feel morally and socially superior to alcohol users because my choice drug doesn't encourage violence, overdosing, throwing up in the street, death or any other attribute associated with alcohol but unlike Rog I know what I know from direct experience and don't feel the need to draw that distinction to make me feel better about being a drug user.

Would lollygagger and Telemachus care to read what I posted again please ... I wrote "For my part (no drugs) I drink sometimes because I like it" Which part indicates any superiority or belief that alcohol is harmless, not addictive, or not a legal drug ? In any case the point was I occasionally choose my vice because I like it and NOT to find peace. Rog

Any chemical that effects your brain could be classed as a "drug" doesn't matter if it's from fermentation or herbs ingested or smoked.
However in common parlance "Drugs" are the like of cocaine, Smack, Psilocybin etc etc including the many man made chemicals.
It generally excludes Alcohol.
(If you wish to be picky why not include chocolate which also has an effect on brain chemistry)

Although the latter isn’t harmless by any means. My point really is that due to its ubiquitousness, people such as yourself don’t consider alcohol to be a drug and draw a marked distinction between it and other drugs such as cannabis. This is irrational and I feel it is my duty to point that out to you, so that you won’t suffer from a continuing delusion. Is all. Oh and to answer your question, the part where you say “(no drugs)”.
