This is the one with the water cooled exhaust (air cooled head) and no gearbox or centrifugal clutch just start and go. Quieter and a better item than the more recent full air cooled offerings . This is called direct drive. And it does have a gearbox albeit a simple crown and pinion arrangement which is miles better than the complication a reverse gear would require. Yes but you know what I meant. The issue with the newer types was that they put in a centrifugal cluth which is a week point. It's not 'direct drive' as it has a gearbox and a therefore a reduction.

I imagine there will be three. Not had a look but a right angle drive will need at least two bevel gears.

Yep, a pinion and a crown wheel. Simples. If it has a neutral setting it would be interesting to see what Honda did with that.

No neutral on this unit.
Getting a bit windy which is a bit rude as this boat is rather long and light so it's slightly lairy.

How can a gear reduction be direct drive?
The Atco boatimpeller is direct drive but a normal outboard can't be.

It's bloody heavy I definitely won't be lifting that out with Dulcinea's derricks! It was taken to the water with a forklift which seemed a very sensible solution. It's hard to tell, but is there any built-in buoyancy?
My last boat was based on a very similar hull from Bonwitco (Norwegian With design) and had a plywood floor encased in GRP. It was flexy so I ripped it out. I had to strip out over 200kg of waterlogged open cell polyurethane "buoyancy" below the floor, which halved the weight of the hull.

It does have buoyancy but it's not Waterlogged.
It turned out when boating it's actually quite a light boat for its size. It's just I am used to smaller dinghies.
I reckon the buoyancy might be alright.

Well you’ve both put me off buying one now. It's a brilliant outboard. I did have two but one got half inched sadly. That particular unit which is late 90s is superb. It did the job today yes a bit noisy but it's underpowered to be fair. 6 hours 5 locks so let's say 4 hours running 2/3 throttle it used about 2 litres of petrol. Not bad really.

Great outboards they arrr. I don't know why they stopped them and made an inferior product.
It's possible because it has a water circuit people assumed this went through the block, sea water problems etc.
In fact the water is pumped to the base of the powerhead near the exhaust and then just comes out the side of the leg at the top. It doesn't circulate around the internals at all.
It does make it quieter as the exhaust does not need to be air cooled which is a significant factor.
the newer ones have a lot of exhaust noise.
I bought my first BF2 around 1995 but for some obscure reason it ended up in a building which was then demolished.
Bye bye outboard.
