The irritation isn't its origins ... it is the idiocy of it.
"Can I get ..." no I'm here to get it for you ... what's wrong with "I would like" or indeed "may I have"

It all went wrong when personal service wasn no longer available in all shops... What is wrong with the honest reply 'maybe but don't ask me, you might find the item in ailse 22'....

I tend not to become concerned by all these things as I am aware that I am superior in all respects to other people anyway.
It's just how it is. One must not grumble.

I've had a look at the few winter mooorings locally, there are not many marinas either, but I really can't see any advantage, Skipton is nice enough for a few days, but not for months on end. Social advantage v cost, I don't get it. I might end up in a marina lined up like a sardine in a tin, next to a jolly couple, or next to someone who is anti social in boating terms. I might pop in to a marina for a week or so if I need services, but I am essentially self contained, I thought that was the point of living on a narrow boat. The point of living on a narrowboat is many things to many people. Being self contained and never needing to be in a marina is an option but it is not the exclusive criteria to narrowboat living. Very often the smugness of those who profess to be the only true and valid boaters merely because they, allegedly, choose to continuously cruise the system is particularly annoying and their superior attitude is more often than not condescending, especially towards those considered on a lower level of expertise. Truly very "smug" indeed if you have the audacity to sit in a lock watching and berating someone else for working your lock too slowly/wrongly....

I do wonder what the reaction would have been if the good Lady had posted that on CWDF! Who do you mean? Surely not this poor, kind soul: - "Our land crew, one small, elderly lady only ever did the turning of her windlass, usually one side at a time, and slowly, which meant each lock took at least an hour to fill. Husband, much fitter seemed oblivious to her struggles and twice I remonstrated with him, as she was physically unable to work the locks and levers, she struggled to push the beams."

Sounds like one might have a chip on ones shoulder. I agree, it does sound like you may have a few on there! Kris is a well balanced man, . . he has a number of chips divided equally between both shoulders, . . and an even larger number of cardboard boxes full of shit located beneath both feet.
