Filled up today.
Couldn't help noticing that the price for full propulsion was a few pennies less than the local Tesco. Why? Surely Tesco's buying power and sheer turnover should be able to trump a small marina with staff manning the pump.
This is far from the first time I've noticed this.
What is going on - are the supermarkets just 'making hay', the marinas making a loss, or something else?

Red diesel prices are a mystery to me and always have been.
Turners manage to sell at around 68ppl base rate, similarly Fazeley Mill marina at 71ppl.
I filled up at Dunchurch Pools at 80 ppl and most recently at Wigrams at about £1pl.
Don't even ask how much it is on the Thames ... last I heard around £1.35ppl.

Dunchurch was 84 for non propulsion today and 127 for all taxes paid (full propulsion) i.e. no discount even though it was red. Tesco at Rugby was over 130 for basic diesel today...

I'd surmise that because Tesco have a far greater turnover of diesel the cost to them changes weekly wheras a marina might only take a delivery every few months and base their selling price on what they paid for it at the time.

To be honest I always check I can select my own declaration or I won't buy (e.g. Braunston) and where possible I use the boat's, but if I need diesel I have to pay the price.
Bought my first 13kg gas since May and it had gone up by about £3 to £4.

My local supplier marina (Denham Yacht Station) when I'm at home, has weekly deliveries during the winter (you have to check they havn't run out at busy times), yet they often still beat the local petrol stations on price for fully taxed stuff.

That's "greater" London for you!

Full propulsion red diesel will be the same as road diesel. Red is the same fuel with a dye added so HRMC can catch illegal users like taxi and van drivers and farmers or builders who use plant fuel in their cars. As heating or gas oil, the price of red carries an environmental charge of about 5%. Turners have a large turnover to agricultural customers so can negotiate a good price, likewise Norbury Wharf who have a big turnover for the hire fleet. Bulk purchases below 2500 lts do not attract vat, but above that do incur vat which registered visitors can offset. Gas purchases from outlets that supply for heating or industrial use(eg fork lifts) are way cheaper than Marinas or boatyards. In Sept I paid £26 for 13kg propane where the local boatyard was £34. Obviously, when out, you don't have a lot of choice for either gas or diesel. Maybe it is worth buying smaller quantities of diesel when you see a good price.

Most places that sell red diesel and operate hire boats won't let you declare 100% domestic because they fiddle the rebated fuel into their own boats, but don't say you heard that from me.

I'm sure you may be right ... but one hire boat yard I visited twice this year persuaded me on both visits (knocking at an open door) to change my 20% propulsion declaration to 0% Not the only place where 0% propulsion is the norm in my experience. I've always been fully aligned to Mr Stabbys way of 'declaring' - the question was more about 'full prices'.

Do we think marinas are buying red diesel (gasoil) cheap then selling it at whatever markup they wish?
Is this "split" declaration thingy actually real or just a way to get more profit.
Has anyone ever heard of anyone getting "done" for turning their propeller with diesel technically meant for electric or heating?
I feel it is all a bit pointless.
Last time I bought diesel on the Thames at Better Boating in reading it was 89ppl the bloke there is selling gasoil to boaters. Not complicated but if you want to pay more you are allowed to.
