I use the radioplayer app on the phone gets a lot of stations, as for unlimited data, it doesn't use much. Just get a cheap radio from argos or somewhere. You will probably find a cheap DAB, yes I know you don't want it but it's so much better than FM. But DAB needs a special aerial, I don't want any special things, I just want to listen to R4, and not bother with extra bits and that cost extra cash, cause extra gadgetry, and then fail for no particular reason. I inherited a smart TV, but I have ever used it, it is used to hide the general clutter I accumulate, and need at a minutes notice. If the smart TV will work without any nonsense, I would use it as it has a bigger screen than my tablet or phone, there is no manual but I think it can work if near a mifi modem. The Roberts Solar Dab uses its own aerial, as I said, sometimes we have to put it in a window. Occasionally it still struggles, so we use the FM or the phone and speaker or just the phone.

Just a hand held radio. Nothing needed apart from batteries. First item on amazon, £2 over your budget. We had a similar one and no real signal issues inside. Years ago when DAB was a new thing I was a dab hand at selecting an appropriate listening aid. I bought a "Bug" radio. It still works about 15-20 years later. Quite impressively good item. It has sexy curves and is good for the radio 4play at 1415. One of these but mine is a white one as slight racism problems prevented me at the time from accepting the darkie. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224597945488 Those curves near the speakers are to die for (even better in white!) and the speakers themselves are pretty good for a small footprint self contained radio. It even has a rewind function. What's not to like ?

If anyone knows of a fairly cheap (less than £100) plus being quite small, DAB radio with a coaxial terminal to the aerial please let me know.

You can also get radio 4 on the smart TV if it’s working. You should be able to get it on normal tvs on free view.

It's rude to speak about someone in the third person when they are present. I was talking about you, not to you. Yes I know.

The bug has a screw in aerial with a coax socket I forget the plug type but it might be an F type coax I think.

Obviously not everyone understands the aesthetics or the similarity to an incredibly beautiful naked woman in the ON mode but rather than elucidate further I should mention that it is also a Really Good Radio.

So what’s the problem then? It must be one of those 'beholder's eye' things.

So what’s the problem then? It must be one of those 'beholder's eye' things. It’s definitely all in the perception or is it the reception?

Pure definitely make good radios, I’ve had a couple and the reception is much better than the equivalent Sony. The rechargeable battery pack in mine was a god send in winter. Charge it up in the day and listen at night.
