Had a walk into Long Eaton and then back down the Erewash canal and up the Trent path. Spotted these two beauties on the canal ... fabulous , especially the two tier one. However it would be life afloat without travelling, which really wouldn't work for me ... it's the moving that makes the boat make sense to us. What do you think ? Rog

When I get too old and infirm to operate locks and go cruising etc it's the sort of thing I'd think about.

I'm happy to be moored up for extended times and for the foreseeable Dulcinea will not be going anywhere.
However I specifically want (and fortunately am able) to live on a boat which could be untied at any moment and be completely self sufficient and self propelled.
Houseboats while an interesting concept do not appeal as it is too much of a compromise.
I also like having the smallest possible space while retaining basic comforts.
Narrow boats arrr too narrow.

I suppose the space is the compensating factor for no movement ... I do get it ... water side views, and sounds etc.
It's just that what we love about life afloat is the moving.

If you lived on the boat 365 days a year with no alternative lodgings it could be a different story.
Definitely for seasonal use the moving thing is the way to go. No question.

Rog I tend to agree, but it is quiet up the Erewash. Well on the off side anyway, the towpath is like a motorway on sunny weekends. Trent lock is Long Eaton “sea side.” I’ve not been ignoring you today I’m busy with final preparations for having the boat out the water. I’m away earlyish in the morning so, if I miss you, hope we see each other again and enjoy all the good weather that we are going to have 🙂. Ps If my boat goes missing, I know what you look like now.

Spent 20 years living aboard 365 days a year and beg to differ, its the only life, trust me you will miss it when life snatches it away

I am intrigued by the terms boating and boaters ... we all use them but actually we all mean different things when we do so Anyway, we've had two days here and I'm ready to move again. The longest we've ever stayed in one spot in our eighteen years on the boat (normally Jan to Sept each year) was the first lockdown in 2020. We stayed a mile or so north of Nantwich for the full eight weeks, and even then I cruised twice a week to break up the stay (to services and laundry at the basin and back). A few days somewhere to explore, shop, and do chores is great ... but then I want to move Rog

On Shapfell I move almost all the time but on Sabina I don't ..... Shapfell is small easy to handle and when I am on it I have itchy feet.
Single handing Sabina H does have some problems which as I age, becoming slower and less nimble, increase
Living on a rarely moving boat is still far, far better than living ashore.

Any plans for a trip on Shapfell JohnV ? Your post highlights what I was trying to say ... I think of boating in terms of a narrow canal boat. I stepped on kris 's fabulous boat and the size was mind blowing ... I was bricking it just thinking of trying to handle it. I've been looking at some of the gorgeous cruisers and sail boats moored here and wondering what they are like to handle. All boats but all utterly different in character and performance. Rog

Rog I do have a few plans for Shapfell and hopefully will get a couple of shortish trips in the next week or so (just locall) then I will just have to see how things go.

It's bordering on hate speech isn't it.
And libel.
Proceedings around both of which I believe a certain forum member is currently hiding from.
