Any boater that cuts any corner is an idiot, even on a canal. A tad harsh. The thing about canal boating is that it is often perceived as inherently safe, hence the average hire-boat induction lecture lasting about 10 minutes and the hirer often a complete novice.

Any boater that cuts any corner is an idiot, even on a canal. How can anyone avoid cutting 'corners' that they can't see, . . because the 'corner', and the immediate surrounding land is submerged under 2' or more of muddy water that's hiding everything from view, . . unless you happen to be a fish with exceptional eyesight and extensive local knowledge ? Anyone that doesn't look at the route before hand when on unknown tidal rivers is also an idiot. Even if its only on google maps which clearly shows the grass bank Here I will be doing the run down to Wisbech later this month and I will do what I always do when on tidal rivers I haven't been on before I will go and look at the route at low tide for as much as I can before taking my boat down there.

Yup. www.wikihow.tech/Change-the-Date-on-Google-Maps#:~:text=The%20date%20of%20your%20current,you%20can%20change%20the%20date.&text=Drag%20and%20slide%20the%20time,year%20you%20want%20to%20see. But it may not be sensitive enough to show high and low tides.

As far as I can tell, unless I am using it wrong, that allows photos taken at different times at locations from street view, not above. Jeez you are a tough audience. Try Google Earth. Select the clock icon at the top of the window to bring up a scroll bar. ETA ... Dear God what have I done? Run for your lives!

Google maps is certainly worth a look, but a lot of the time the satellite pics can be when the channel is covered. Sometimes you might get lucky. Or is there a way to select a certain time period that I am not aware of? Most small coastal harbour and river entrances usually have a pilotage chart. Some of which are better kept up to date than other. Here is a good example of one that is regularly updated due to the narrow channel entrance and constantly shifting sands. blakeneyharbourassociation.co.uk/buoyageThat is excellent and on the web rather than paper. I used to use www.eastcoastpilot.com/ when I was out there but its paper

I don't see a clock icon on either the App (android) or the website. I think if my days of not being able to see a damn clock are gone, then I probably shouldn't be doing any boat anyway.

That is excellent and on the web rather than paper. I used to use www.eastcoastpilot.com/ when I was out there but its paper I've still got my trusty 'East coast rivers by Jack Coote' from before this interweb thingy arrived. I've got Jack's 1985 edition and also the 2008 edition by his daughter on my bookshelf

Back on post... (yawn!)
Subjected to the "emergency team" arriving at lock 8 to drain it and replace the seal whilst I was valiantly trying to get enough water in to get up the lock having already let water down from the next one a long, long way up the flight....
"Sorry", said I (being that kind of person and watched by men with life jackets tut tutting - the lad with the barriers to stop the cyclists and walkers falling in kindly opened a gate for me). "I checked this morning, there was no notice so I wouldn't have dreamed of getting in your way".
Apparently I was at fault as they thought they'd get it done before any boats were on the move (must have been around 7.30am - I don't wear a watch) and he told me to stop any boats coming down (?).

Are we talking Atherstone metanoia ? We're planning being there Monday or Tuesday. Rog Yes - locks 8 and 9 on the Atherstone flight. Apparently they have replaced the seal on one of them. Must have been a bodge quick job as there have been many boats through since that and I still can't be sure which gates were worse. The most annoying thing was the Vollies (when I finally got there) happily told me they knew about it the night before but couldn't tell anyone as they weren't there ...? Anyway, worse things happen at sea (but I can now honestly say I have been stranded on the rocks in both kinds of water!). Good luck next week - it will be fine - I'm still confused as to why they have chosen to restrict the half of the flight that has no real comparative issues but ... what do I know?
