Jane mentioned today that she'd quite like to head south and visit London next year. Not a problem I thought ... we can book a Rembrandt Gardens spot in the spring and off we go bumbling our way south. Hopefully we'll be back to our usual boating in January next year 🤞 But it got me thinking about planning. Now naughtyfox was the absolute master at planning ... all credit where it's due. Me ... I prefer to just busk it day by day and see how it goes. Anyone who's read Richard Osman's 'Thursday Murder Club' books (highly recommend) will know the weather / weather forecaster theory ... I'm definitely the weather and Jane's the forecaster. What's your preference ... just set off and decide left or right as you reach junctions ... or plan a route, moorings, visiting sites, and full itinerary? Rog

Teacher asks the kids in the class "what do you want to be when you grow up?"
Little Johnny puts his hand up.
'Ah, Johnny, so what do you want to be ?"
"I want to be a mass murderer. I want to kill lots of people"
This is from the children. Presumably it is a film reference.
Never make any plans.

I normally set off with a vague plan but it's always a moveable feast. If I discover there is something of interest going on elsewhere then I will modify the plan to take that thing in. The whole point is that it is an antidote to driving a truck where I have to be at such-and-such a place at such-and-such a time.

We're exactly like Vince.Every day our planned destinations are liable to change due to weather, nice shops or pubs, broken locks etc. We'll mostly get where we planned but not always in the right order ! P always starts with a 'cunning plan',but I've never known it work out exactly.

I was told by a personal influencer (one of my children) recently that I might be a good truck driver firstly because I like playing with my phone and being by myself (I know) and secondly because I had a relative who was the brains behind a magazine called Trucks and Trucking.
So yeah. I'll be the next big thing if my legacy doesn't get through the court case. If it does I'll just carry on with pointless boating related shit and eventually die.

Surely it depends on the duration of the trip. If you are out for several months, you can enjoy some fairly random route planning. But if you have a week to do a ring to get back to base, you have to stick to the plan.

Gosh, that's a blast from the past, I remember Trucks and Trucking magazine. There used to be loads of magazines, Trucks and Trucking, Trucking International, Headlight, Truck, Truck and Driver, I think Truck and Driver is the only one still clinging on nowadays. Internet, innit?

Thinking back to hire and share boat days when time was restricted, my only planning would be consideration of a route ... Four Counties ... Stourport and back.
I never planned a cruising itinerary.

We set off with a rough plan, liable to change. So when we go back, considering heading Sheffield way. peterboat and possibly dogless , or whoever might know, is there anywhere within walking distance of railway stations it's safe to leave the boat, more crucially, where not to? E.G Doncaster, so we can hop back home via Leeds. Interesting that there's a direct line from Goole to Castleford with only 2 trains a day, 8am and 8pm. A local fishist told me they call it the parliamentary line, can't be closed down without an act of parliament, so they just run 2 trains a day. The alternative frequent trains run via Doncaster at a higher price!

They don't work for free, but they do work for less, and all of the other costs involved in running a business- such as land values for operating centres etc- are substantially lower, being a post-Communist economy. That's why people such as Mrs Thatcher and red-tie Tories such as yourself were so keen on using eastern Europeans to undercut the cost of working class labour in the UK.

Off like a Duracell Bunny.... Me? a Red Tory??? They all voted Brexit, the fools. Margaret, your Great Leader, agreed with me about the EU being A Good Thing, she was just sooo wrong about much else.
Not so keen on supporting british brewers though eh! Put down that Perla Mocna and pay attention...

I would add that the locale is not exactly listed as an AOONB, but it seemed out of the way enough to not attract unwanted attention. Also there were some seemingly permanent residents so there's probably always somebody around. However...what's wrong with Sheffield Basin? You won't be living aboard so I don't see a clash with the rules. When I was there it had 24HR security guards.

Such a boon to us all that working class heroes such as yourself fixed it for everyone by getting the UK out of the despotic EU with all the benefits that have subsequently made themselves apparent to anyone with eyes.
