Wild and wooly night last night here in Beverley. Very high winds ..... strong enough to make Sabina bounce .... and that takes some doing. One of the big old barges just upstream of me has broken at least one of it's lines and is 3/4 across the river. My deck broom seems to have taken off for parts unknown but apart from a skewiff flue everything else seems to have survived.

There's an article in today's Daily Mail about a woman in Beverley out walking her dog knocked unconscious by a flying broom.

Blowy in Staffs too.
At least the sun's shining this morning, and apart from the door mat having decided to take off, we seem okay.

Not that it'll be any comfort to you, but the first 12 months of owning a boat is often like this.
Then you move on to the things you want to do, rather than got to do.
But it's still better than no boat in my opinion.

The one I have on the little Refleks is the third down on this page. Also quite expensive but very effective. www.toplicht.de/en/shop/ofen-herd-und-kocher/abgashaube/refleks-abgashaubenI've also got one of these ones but I bought it secondhand for £5 so I am a little concerned it may not be very effective. Its a spare in case the one above goes missing.. I reckon an H is the way ahead.

Is the previous owner of Donkey's boat sniggering? I'd ask for some of the money back.

Here's our chimney, works fine, although I bet 99% of the heat goes straight up to the crows' nests.

I thought Foxy was being quite funny. I know I can go on a bit about my trials and tribulations with the boat but most of it is about me letting off a bit of steam (as well as getting good advice about what to do) so I don't end up getting all worked up about it. I'm happy with the boat and expected teething problems.

Wet and Windy night doesn't come close... about 3 am, I actually had to close the bedroom porthole as the rain was blowing in sideways - which came as shock given we're moored head on!
At least (for now) we're safely behind the protection of the flood gates a little farther up here at the Navigation (Broad cut) on the Calder & Hebble... STILL on route to Huddersfield but now stuck until the river drops
The old couple booked on cruise 1 have said they can't come 2 weeks earlier so we're looking for alternatives in August involving the Rochdale/Huddersfield other end... if not, it's refund time.
WE still have to get over that way so we may as well just chug on slowly and aim to be at Standedge for our revised booking of 25th March - might even try it a week earlier to get the other side earlier....

Is the previous owner of Donkey's boat sniggering? I'd ask for some of the money back. That's a bit of a twatish thing to say in my view. There seems to have been so much gone wrong with Donkey's boat since he bought it. As for our engine, it worked fine but it had always pumped out blue smoke; it was around 32 years old 4 years ago when I asked about whether it was worth putting in a new piston and liner, and when we bought the boat I had a feeling that we might be investing some money in the engine. It was not an unexpected or emergency repair. As we were away for about 4.5 months, this was a good opportunity for T W marine (the only people in the country who know what they are doing with Bukh engines?) to take it to their workshop and rip it all to pieces and rebuild it, replacing lots of bearings and other items, such as the water pump and alternator, piston and liner, valves, etc. The engine could still have been working today as it was, but I have absolutely no regrets that we 'bit the bullet' and gave it a new lease of life (another 30 years said T W); we have had no problems with it since. Also, no more burning oil and producing blue smoke means we are environmentally conscientious, so you should all be grateful for that.
