BTW, Good morning John, my manors along with my ability to drive a phone and proof read seem to have left me this morning!I'm pretty sure you can get a tongue lock to help prevent this problem.

Todays task was the fitting of a canister oil filter and the head of course. These are over £30 from ebay but make changing an oil filter both cheap, clean and a doddle! It took no more than 5 minutes, and I am sure if I had fitted just a paper element, it would have took half an hour plus all the oil in the bilges! Paper element filters are now nearly a tenner and are very old stock so for me it was a good selling point mod.

And so the pain continues fitted 4 injectors replace wiring to the glowplugs [diesel rots normal solder] which idiot put the heater plugs under the injectors eh. Repaired the spill rail by solering a piece in [silver solder] Steering sorted by tigtning up clamps and a big nut so now nearly drives straight. Waiting for gaskets etc from ASAP some are on backorder I will be fitting a airfilter to the beast now that I have created room which should make the beast quieter and will help the engine live longer [its a BMC why bother] Now need to seal some windows as window fitters didnt bother! All of this stuff is keeping me out of trouble I have loads of other stuff to do as well so my life seems very busy at the moment no bad thing

Little by little you're getting there, it's time you'll start to think on what you'll be going to spend the money you'll be getting when you sell this boat.
Peter.

I am having a bit of a change of heart with the beast I have a full 24 volt DC electric motor setup from lynch, and am considering fitting this along with a full refit. I bought recently a 24 volt whispergen and I am thinking of making this a sort of eco boat. At the moment it moves really fast at just tickover speeds so the electric motor shouldnt have any problems it has a big roof for solar and the door opens wide enough for a Rayburn royal to be dropped in for heating, hot water and cooking. What are the thoughts of the collective mind on this? I will be insulating the beast as well to try and give it some heat retention

Jeeez ....... don't you think a Rayburn Royal is just a bit on the heavy side for a 32' boat ..... let alone overkill for the heating
just been trying to check ..... think the royal is around 650 lbs excluding hearth !!!

Nearly 300 kilos John but the roof goes back so we can drop the blighter in. It will be on the centerline of the boat and the engine and box will be gone, however a ton of batteries will be on the centerline as well should be ok I think

The Rayburn is an interesting one, again, it alters your potential customer. It's a big hot lump In a not massive boat, it would be unbearably hot on there IMHO, our 27 x 9'6" is scorching hot with a 4kw blown air Wallis heater - how much hit does a gert big Rayburn chuck out?

It wont really be diesel electric it will be solar mostly the whispergen is a 24 volt 35 amp 5 kilowatt of heat personal powerplant. its silent so in winter it will boost the batteries, I was thinking about 1600 ah of full traction batteries should have a good range, its the old problem of people buy boats but just potter around this will fit the bill nicely. Also electric boat do enjoy a license rebate. We went out on it yesterday in its 1500 bmc guise it was noisy really noisy smelly smokey did I mention noisy? but very swift to say the least, I might sell my big boat and keep the little one. Now a Rayburn will do about 10 KW at full bore thats split between space heating and water, so with just over tickover it should be cosy all through the boat at about 5 kw with a bit of work most rads will be gravity

In that case it's a different story, would be an interesting project no doubt! Dad lived on a Broom DC30 in perfect comfort for 9 years before health issues got him back on dry land. I know your not keen on BMC but it shouldn't be that bad! Ours is lovely and quite, it is well silenced (along with having the exhaust outlet underwater!) and well sorted in terms of inlet filtration -induction noise was our biggest issue, I used a Hyundai 1.6 coupe air box, it knocked the induction racket on the head straight away. Just to give you an idea of the longevity of GRP, ours is 50 years old and in fine shape - no welding yet

The engine might not be knackered but it is tired so this way I build in reliability because the drivetrain will be all new. Plus if its a full refit the rest will be like new as well. I agree with you about fibreglass its way better than steel. For the two of us the boat is big enough plus we tend to cruise a day and have a day off, so with plenty of solar we should be ok for very cheap cruising, plus the whispergen will do the hot water very quickly, as well as charging the batteries
