during the 90's I worked away from home, travelling back at weekends from the north east to the south west - M1, M42, M5. I had a mobile phone for work, long before they were commonly used. I reported to the police no less than 6 accidents involving caravans, including jack-knifing and overturning. I don't recall seeing any other 'just happened' accidents. the problem is not restricted to narrow country roads. The oddest case was on a Sunday afternoon on the long hill down from Clevedon towards the Avon Bridge. Heavy traffic ahead was suddenly braking - there was a large white box sitting in the fast lane, followed by odd bits of domestic stuff across all 3 lanes. Half a mile further on a Range Rover hitched up to a trailer frame was stopped on the hard shoulder - the lady driver was standing next to the trailer scratching her head like something out of a cartoon film. So what? Ive seen accidents involving cars, motorbikes, lorises, buses, vans. Perhaps it would better to just ban all vehicles. Idiot.

Caravaners like places that mostly have single carriageway (or worse still single track) roads as their destination meaning the rest of society ends up stuck behind them chewing their steering wheel. Towing a boat, motorbike, glider, hot air balloon, burger van, fair ground ride, mobile tat stall, race, rally or classic car, vintage farm machinery, builders trailer, compressors, genie lifts, horse box - anything other than a tin shed tbh is fine though π Usually when I'm towing my glider I get stuck behind dozy drivers (without trailers) going far too slow. Between the house and the gliding club is a 2000' mountain pass (with a long uphill straight) and I enjoy hurtling past the tourists with my enormous trailer whilst they gasp in horror. Going uphill that is, going downhill you have to be more careful. The one I enjoy seeing is the idiot who thinks I'm holding the traffic up but as they make their move to pass they realise its the slow moving lorry or tractor in front of me and there isn't enough road to safely overtake a car a long caravan and another vehicle. If I am feeling generous I will drop back and leave enough space to drop in. (Joke)

Β I've been known to tow a 16' mayland along with a 10' heron dinghy (but not simultaneously!) now and again. Besides, boats - especially smaller trail boats are easier to see past and overtake. Pikey condos are less easy to see around or through and as such are a menace to the motorist unencumbered by a trailer (excepting Nick!)

And now I see it's been confirmed who you were on CDWF (which had passed me by previously) I can only say it's not a surprise, you were on there too. The reason you are an idiot is quite simple, it is because the fact you claim you never saw any 'just happened accidents' (which I think is, well being economical with the the truth shall we say) doesn't mean they do not occur. Now if you were to come up with some sound statistical evidence that vehicles towing caravans are proportionately involved in more accidents than those not I might actually start to take some interest in your 'findings'. Untill then then you just sound like somebody with an irrational prejudice.

So where do caraboats/caracruisers fit within the irrational haters minds? I can see the steam blowing from ears, hear the cogs grinding, as they consider the paradox. "I love it, it's a boat, I hate it, it's a caravan, my brain hurts, BOOM!"

I regularly see caravans strewn all over the motorway system in the summer months.
I will try and dig some stats, up but it's my strong feeling that caravans are much more likely to be involved in an accident.
The vast majority I have seen seem to involve no other vehicle, the clear inference being that they are inherently unstable or the person towing it is not a very good driver.
I think they should either be banned or given a Police escort.

Or be subject to some sort of inspection like an MoT or a CSS certificate?
I don't know if its true but I think mjg said earlier that caravans are not subject to roadworthiness tests. This could definitely explain accident stats. I imagine there would be a lot of accidents involving Ford vehicles if Ford vehicles were not subject to MoT tests.

Caravan owners are demonstrably too tight to take their family on a proper holiday, what chance is there of them maintaining their caravan in a sound and roadworthy condition?

Yes there is that. I bet a lot of caravans have old crossply tyres on them.

Just did a search for "caravan MoT" and it seems the EU proposed to introduce testing by 2017.
Is this why we now have Brexit? Hoardes of caravanners came out and voted just so that they could continue to tow completely unroadworthy piles of scrap about? Power to the people.
