I think as Kris points out the majority of speeders will be caught by fixed and mobile speed cameras rather than police patrols so there wont really be any discrimination positive or other wise I would say. Plus the maximum fine that can be applied under this regime is I believe £2,500 (for speeding on a motorway) which to some very high earners is like me getting fined a few quid. It's a paltry ( to some) £1,000 for offences on other roads. Not really a financial deterrent at all really. It is also worth pointing out that these are for prosecutions for offences that result after being referred to a court. Even though it's still possible to be fined for doing 31 in a 30 as an example, such offences are much more likely to be dealt with under ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) guidelines, which allow some discretion and the fixed penalty system. At lower levels for a first offence you will likely still be offered a speed awareness course (at a cost) as an alternative to having points on your licence. These new fines don't replace any of this. It used to be under construction and use regulations that speedos where allowed a 10% inaccuracy clearly that has gone Speedo's can legally overstate your actual speed within certain tolerances but they are not allowed to indicate you are travelling slower than you actually are. www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/25/schedule/3/madeI believe but can't say for certain C&U was superseded by an EU directive.

Hence the 35 in 30 etc. Remember that's where it starts.

Your right they generally overread. When it says 35 you are more likely only doing 32/33

Averaging cameras on Lumbertubs way and the A428 from Brackmills to Yardley Hastings on. Camera Vans busy as ever - we also have a motorbike that tucks in nice and tight on the approaches to villages where a van may not be able to park.

Only been out in the car for three hours today and seen three cars pulled up at the roadside by marked police cars. 2 years ago the speed camera in our village was turned on after there had been a death - old fossil had not cleared his car windscreen of ice, could not see, and drove in front of a lorry which was going over the speed limit. Speed limit for village reduced from 60km/h to 50. One morning I stopped beside the graveyard where there is a good view of the camera and saw 7 flashes in 25 minutes. Cheered me up!

We were walking to the pub on Xmas day and a car coming towards us got flashed. He had no idea why we were waving and laughing our heads off.

I think its pretty well universally agreed now the single Fixed site cameras are a waste of time - we have none in Cleveland now either. We do have an active small number of mobile units too though. this lad local to us achieved notoriety after parking his BMW 'strategically' in front of the one that parks near to us. needless to say the police were not amused. (He'd been caught by the self same one a few weeks before). Yet interestingly we were in West Yorkshire recently and the place is peppered with front facing Tuvelo's and rear facing Gatso's, possibly great for catching the locals in unfamiliar territory but it was easy to spot the locals who were braking sharply as they approached each one rather than sticking to the limit. How many are active though gawd knows but my understand from other forums is that they are. Northumberland have some snazzy looking new camera vans too. They have cause a bit of consternation because some people dont think they look enough like a 'speed camera van' and it's 'not fair' to use them.

They are allowed to work outside of the 'visibility' guidelines for speed cameras if they believe there is a particular problem at a particular location or if a particular location has a particular problem with significant numbers of very high end speeders. Whether that is the case in the example you refer to of course I have no idea. (PS - I'm surprised no body has yet spouted the banal comment 'If you don't speed you have nothing to be concerned about' which is what normally happens when the issue of speed cameras come up for discussion on internet forums).

It's still a further small step (albeit a very small one) to treating everything in a yes/no or binary nature. Cornwall has a law that says you must pick up dog shit wherever the public have access - try speaking to a farmer that has a public footpath going across his field and asking him whether he picks up after his sheepdog...
