I saw a sign yesterday that expressed eloquently the reason someone didn't vote.....couldn't possibly reproduce on here as its language I do not use and it may offend...but the gist of it indicated all parties similarly tainted..... I saw a hand painted sign on the side of an old wooden Ricky butty "Vote Corbyn if you give a shit". Fortunately I do not so am not obliged. If I did vote I would go for monster raving loony or similar and that would be a waste of time and resources.

Thankfully, most of those too thick to vote are also too lazy!

We each have a duty to vote. I believe it should be compulsory in a democracy. If you can't choose a candidate, you can spoil your paper or leave it blank. I have a postal vote so it's no hassle. Iv voter turnout was 100% it might change politics forever. But isn't a low turnout also indicative of a loss in confidence in the entire political system. Why should anyone be forced to vote for a party if they were all influenced and controlled by an elitist system....for example?

I said people should be compelled to vote but they could spoil their paper if they really couldn't make a choice. That means no one is forced to vote for any party. Anyway, in the UK you can't vote for a party, you vote for a candidate.

Thankfully, most of those too thick to vote are also too lazy! In your dreams. Sadly it's only the thickos that can't tell the difference between left and right that swing elections one way or the other. The floating voter. Floater for short.

Happy to be compelled to vote only if 'Can't be arsed' is added to the ballot paper and if 'Can't be arsed' wins then no MP gets elected for that area.

Its an interesting idea but what then happens if you never register to vote in the first place?
Would there be a fine for failing to register to vote?

When this is all over on Friday and someone starts complaining about the state of the country, I will have one question: Did you vote? If they answer yes, I will have a conversation with them, If they answer no I will say " Well shut up then", If anyone were to ask that on those terms I'd request them to get real, dismount their high horse and mind their own business. Your choice, of course. I admit that I don't agree fully with any of the parties but I have chosen to vote for the "best fit". It really hacks me off when people complain that the government is doing it all wrong but haven't bothered to vote. If you don't vote then you have to put up with what you get and don't start bleating that only x% of the population voted for the winning party. That's because so many people didn't get off their arses and vote. And don't get me started on women who don't vote because it's not their thing.... other women died so they have the chance to vote. Now I'm getting altitude sickness up here on my soap box so I'm going to get down carefully and do some work!

Voting could be based on your National Insurance number or Gateway ID. Most of us are registered with the state in one way or another. And, yes, it could be an offence, liable to a fine, for not turning up to vote. I completely accept that some don't want to vote. There could be a box saying, I won't vote because I can't be bothered to think hard enough to make a choice that will affect my future and that of future generations. Even then you could still tick all boxes or none. The ballot papers are anonymous so you wouldn't get nicked.

This sounds about as complicated as trying to avoid using Amazon Prime.

The ballot papers are anonymous so you wouldn't get nicked. This is a commonly held belief and is completely untrue. "Votes can be traced by matching the numbered ballot paper to its similarly numbered counterfoil; the numbered counterfoil also bears the voter's registration number from the electoral register which is hand-written by the Polling Clerk when the ballot paper is issued. As all the ballot papers for each candidate - including fringe candidates such as Sinn Fein, communists, fascists, nationalists, etc. - are bundled together, anyone having access to those documents can speedily trace the name and address of every voter for such candidates if they wish" www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,,-1051,00.html

I was wondering how obvious it would be to the counters if someone just went into the database and tweaked the totals a bit?

The ballot papers carry a serial number which can be traced back k to you if fraud is suspected. But the ballot is still secret and confidential.
