I just don't understand why you would use the name of a 4th (or poss 5th) century obscure monk for your forum name, when the only thing he was famous for is opening his gob at the wrong time and getting chopped up by some gladiators. Because it's the name of our boat! Some 4th or possibly 5th century obscure monk might have had the same name, and there were others including HMS Telemachus in WW2 ( a submarine), but that is not the chap after whom the boat is named. Does having my boat name as my forum name offend you? Does naming our boat after a greek mythological character offend you? Wow, folk are so easily offended these days! Good Lord ...... who said I was offended ....... what a silly idea ........... It's called sarcasm

Interesting answer and says a lot about you. I would say kindness as a general trait is far more desirable in a person, but that's not to undervalue intelligence. Agree with this.

I dont think its a simple question at all. Please illuminate me.
When you are sick, lonely, depressed, hungry etc etc. What do you need? I suggest a kind person - hopefully an intelligent one but a simple one will do, certainly not an unkind intelligent person who just says 'tough luck'. Are you saying that you are any of those things? If so then I'm sure somebody here will be able to help within a day or two if you are willing to say where you are.

Maybe not!
But I come back to the absurdity of the question. Both traits are good ones. You cannot say which is the better one because, as I said, it depends on the circumstances. And why should we have to make the choice? It is an abstract concept.

...It is incumbent upon the more intelligent to drive Society forward, this sometimes involves being what might appear to be less than kind occasionally. Wow...so you seriously saying you think there are occasions where kindness should give way to 'intellegence'''? Well most of us do it every day. The 'system'' makes us pay our taxes to hurt people we have never met. Is that intellegence or being dumbed down?

We are so far apart in our views over this I'll leave you to debate it with others.

We are so far apart in our views over this I'll leave you to debate it with others. I suggest that your views are thus because you are physically OK in terms of food, heating (well, its summer!), clean water etc. and you have need of kind people around you. But under other circumstances it could be different. It would be a mistake to insist that optimal personal characteristics were based only on your current situation, and not on a situation you might find yourself in at another time, or situations other people find themselves in.

Intelligent ones hopefully work at eradicating the cause rather than endlessly treating the symptoms, cost unknown..

Intelligence helps people to know who to be kind to.
For example I see people asking for money on the streets in London. I am not a prejudiced type of person in general so I either have to give them all money or none of them. If I give them all money then I have no money for myself. If I give some of them money then I am prejudiced against the others who I do jot give money to. So the answer is to give none of them money.
I know its not directly related but one of the advantages of intelligence over kindness is that there are all sorts of people out to take advantage anyway so being kind "willy nilly" is a recipe for disaster.

]If I was in Darkest Africa (or Luton!) and someone on the street shouted "Hey, you, white guy!" I would just say "What?" and not consider that nig-nog or Paki to be at all racist, just trying to get my attention. (snip And if he shouted," Hey, you, snowballs"?

I would rather donate £100 towards developing a workable strategy than give a tenner to someone who's just going to scuttle off for a rock.

Maybe you should change it to "Just another tall gay pilot who went to a good school and drives a shiny Hudson Boat" ...with fake rivets.
