I'm sure he'll be putting the details on here when he gets a minute.

It's the railway swingbridge about a mile and a half topside of Goole, Peter. Were there just red lights only on both eastern and western navigation spans, and how were they laid out and positioned ?

The reason I'm asking is that C&RT are disclaiming their responsibility as the 'responsible(sic) competent(sic) harbour authority' for lighting the bridge because - quote - "It belongs to Network Rail". Going by what you and John were saying on the phone about the difficulty of seeing the lights/marks due to them now being buried in uncut undergrowth, I wonder how many of the 27 lights/marks from Selby down to Hook Bridge that British Waterways inherited when they took over the Ouse in 1989 are still visible, or working ?

The bridge is lit up very well however it isnt until you are closer that you can see the red lights lost among the glare of white/orange. The marker lights on the bank seemed to be working but in the daytime are invisible due to overgrowth of the banks

The bridge is lit up very well however it isnt until you are closer that you can see the red lights lost among the glare of white/orange. The marker lights on the bank seemed to be working but in the daytime are invisible due to overgrowth of the banks It looks from the aerial photo chart that Cygnus has posted as if the navigation (opening) spans are at present lit with red lights to both sides of both spans, which is an unusual departure from normal practice, but OK if you're aware of it before making passage for the first time. That aerial photo chart, however, is a very different story. There's very little on that page that's correct, and if you were following the red line on Monday, that would account for your grounding between the low end of Hospital Island and the ness opposite Howden. The red channel marking line is a long way from where it should be, which is much closer to the ness and directly in line with the top jetty at Howden, . . not well to the West of it, as shown on that chart. From below Howden to just upriver of Hook bridge it's about right, but it then dives off under the eastern opening span of the bridge, which is the wrong one to take when stemming the flood outbound, as 'Sabina' was on Monday. The current under the western opening span isn't quite as fierce as under the eastern side, there's less of an easterly 'set' passing the main pier, and there's a bit less turbulence and eddy's to contend with.

This is a page in the River Ouse Tidal Section guide. You may well be familiar with this but I'll post it anyway. As far as I'm aware the Bridges on the tidal Ouse are all well marked, and ditto the bank markers are up to scratch as far as Howden Dyke. But I think there are quite a few marks above Howden Dyke that leave a lot to be desired. Perhaps neglect has crept in due to the sparcity of commercial traffic topside of Howden Dyke. There is a lot of bankside overgrowth needing severe cutting back in parts, particularly above Selby. I haven't seen this aerial photo chart before, but having now seen one page of it, I have to say that I'm not at all impressed. 'Sabina' grounded just lowside of the M62 bridge on Monday, . . could you please post the page showing that, I would be very interested to see if the red line on that is anywhere near being correct. From what I could gather over the phone at the time, I think 'Sabina' probably moved over to the southern shore too soon after clearing the bridge, and too far above the first port hand light below it.
