I've always fancied going round the British Isles in a small boat. probably not alone in that !!).
I mean including drying out in small harbours etc so the boat would have to sit flat (bilge keels). Does not need to be useable on the cut.
I'm more of a motor boat person but I realise it would get very expensive on diesel so would have to have a sailing boat.
For single handing. What's the ideal boat? I can live in small spaces but would not want much less than 30ft long.
All opinions, links to nice boats and views on practicality are welcomed. Ta.

Small motorboat with a mizzen. a mizzen on a motor boat is only used to steady the boat, it has next to no driving power; there are dozens of practical motor-sailers out there which have a full, but modest, set of sails which would be much more practical. I would comment that anyone planning to circumnavigate the British Isles single-handed will have to be prepared to spend hours, or even days, continuously at the helm or at least awake and alert, waiting for the tide/weather to get into the next anchorage on the way. It would be simpler and safer to keep well away from the coast line and hardly ever stop en route, because making the landfall and navigating estuaries and small harbour mouths is the most hazardous part of the journey (oh, and avoiding fishing boats that are unable to change course or speed to avoid you). I would say that making a single-handed transatlantic voyage is less risky and demanding than what you are planning. Will the mandarins at Vauxhall castle approve?

Who said anything about the mizzen powering the boat you twat.

It doesn't have to be a bilge keeler you do get legs so most yatchs can dry out.

To be honest I'd go for something with as shallow a draft as possible, so you can go up rivers and creeks this would be more interesting than being stuck on the coast all the time. Here's a couple of examples of what I mean, but these are a little bit small m.apolloduck.com/boat.phtml?id=543957m.apolloduck.com/boat.phtml?id=521377Personally I don't like western rigs much either so I'd much prefere a junk rig.

Summer is better yes !! I tend to think of these ridiculous ideas at this time of year for some reason. No good at planning so nothing ever happens anyway. If the boat was not also the main dwelling I'd be tempted by a "microcruiser" . looks quite interesting. Just a cabin with a bed in it. Nordica 16 is rather nice ! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordica_16

That first one looks good kris ! Lovely little boat. i think the first one is a brilliant little boat ideal if you not planing to have it as your main residence. Trail able as well so you could return to bass and start agian next season do the whole circumnavigation over a perioud of years. It's also not much money.

And it's already in Scotland so could just pop down the coast one way then do the other side another time. Bobs yer uncle etc
