I wondered who he was referring to (was it me and my alter ego). I've done about 1nm of sailing in a dinghy. Both my grandfather's were keen yachtsmen when they weren't driving their respective Lagonda and Aston Martin. They must have been poor buggers I do feel sorry for them. Peter Enregistrer

a mizzen on a motor boat is only used to steady the boat, it has next to no driving power; there are dozens of practical motor-sailers out there which have a full, but modest, set of sails which would be much more practical. I would comment that anyone planning to circumnavigate the British Isles single-handed will have to be prepared to spend hours, or even days, continuously at the helm or at least awake and alert, waiting for the tide/weather to get into the next anchorage on the way. It would be simpler and safer to keep well away from the coast line and hardly ever stop en route, because making the landfall and navigating estuaries and small harbour mouths is the most hazardous part of the journey (oh, and avoiding fishing boats that are unable to change course or speed to avoid you). I would say that making a single-handed transatlantic voyage is less risky and demanding than what you are planning. Will the mandarins at Vauxhall castle approve? Who said anything about the mizzen powering the boat you twat. perhaps you should read and understand the OP before you jump on your usual bandwagon. You really do come across as an oleaginous morsel of canine excrement. nuff said.

You both havent been sailing have you? bilge keels go sideways whilst a singe keel goes forward can be right annoying when on a tight course due to obstructions you want to miss!! is that directed at me? Because I've done a bit of sailing. I wouldn't call myself a sailor but I've probably done 20,000nm under sail. But I haven't run someone else's boat aground on the Ouse yetπ That was rude ...... and also wrong ....... the bottom was too near the top and we were on the recommended track (in the guide)

To be honest all of the really scary white knuckle stories Ive heard have happened on the Ouse. As Tony says it is a really treacherous bit of water. I heard so many that it put me off taking my boat to york when I was up that way.

I said nothing about the mizzen powering the boat, but off you trotted none the less. I tend to dish out the same respect to individuals as they choose to dish out on me. Pick your shit up, bag it and take it home with you.

My Ouse guide shows a different track to the one we were using!! As for bilge keels I having had real problems with them in the past would not want to go around the UK with one, I have sailed from Australia back to the UK in a sailing yacht on a very long way around I suspect if we had bilge keels I would still be doing the journey!!

The locky of course won't let you out if it's too high and flowing too fast. When I read of the problems some have had part of me is sort of glad we never got off the Selby Canal....
