perhaps you should read and understand the OP before you jump on your usual bandwagon. You really do come across as an oleaginous morsel of canine excrement. nuff said. It's you that can't read arsehole. I said nothing about the mizzen powering the boat, but off you trotted none the less. I tend to dish out the same respect to individuals as they choose to dish out on me. Pick your shit up, bag it and take it home with you. he said: 'so would have to have a sailing boat.' you proposed a motor boat with a mizzen. nuff said.

is that directed at me? Because I've done a bit of sailing. I wouldn't call myself a sailor but I've probably done 20,000nm under sail. nano-metres? Don't swear at me with that European rubbish.

So where does it state anywhere that a mizzen will power the boat dummy?

it was probably a bit rude for that I apologise to peter. To be honest all of the really scary white knuckle stories Ive heard have happened on the Ouse. As Tony says it is a really treacherous bit of water. I heard so many that it put me off taking my boat to york when I was up that way. Each time we tried to get on the Ouse we had to give up and only ever got as far as Selby basin due the river levels. The locky of course won't let you out if it's too high and flowing too fast. When I read of the problems some have had part of me is sort of glad we never got off the Selby Canal.... That's an adventure in itself as the Selby Canal is so shallow. Along it our engine was overheating, I'm guessing the sun warmed the water up. As soon as we flopped back onto the wide Aire the temperature needle slumped back to 60 degrees C. Selby isn't a bad little town, all in all.

That was rude ...... and also wrong ....... the bottom was too near the top and we were on the recommended track (in the guide) I have twice bumped into stones/rocks on the sea/lake coasts in Finland when I was 'on course'. The thing is here, is that in Winter the ice shifts stuff about, so the charts can never be 100% accurate. Yes but where the kids on the bus at the time?

Going back to the topic at hand might it be worth circumnavigating the UK (bearing in mind there would be no particular hurry so no need for a fast sail or motor vessel) in a well designed canal boat. Not a narrow boat but something like a 40ft double chined steel barge or similar. As long as any exposed decks drain suitably effectively it could be a "wet boat" and do the job quite effectively.
I seem to remember an irritating celeb did it in Peter Nichols "FCN" barge but that was a publicity stunt.

The first time was here - where we live, as we set off from Himankakylä harbour into the Rahja archipelago. The town of Kalajoki had recently produced a new map in the hope of encouraging boaters to venture into that area, and the channel had been dredged for this purpose, having a reputation for being treacherously shallow and full of rocks. Luckily we were going slow and we bumped into said rock. Since then I have always raised the outboard engine so the propellor is kicking just under the water surface. We have always gone dead slow along that short stretch - sometimes when the water has been clear we have seen the stones and it is SHOCKING! to see how damned closed they are to you! The second time was on Lake Päijänne when we travelled about 150 miles from Lahti to Jyväskylä 6 years ago. Bombing along and than a loud BANG! as the engine flipped up - it's designed to do just that if you hit something. The steel on the outboard stem was distinctly crushed. Well, I tell you what - pop into any Finnish harbour and have a look at all the raised propellors for a good laugh. They're all chipped and bent. What you all don't realise on Thunderboat and Canalworld, is that you can have the most amazing boating holiday in Finland. It's not canal meandering, but for a few thousand Pounds you could get a boat and spend weeks going round and round the lakes and islands, camping on them, and making little fireplaces and grilling pork steaks with potatoes and chanterelle mushroom sauce, whilst sipping a respectable German pinot noir whilst watching the sun set. There isn't another country anything like this for the lake systems, fishing, and remote atmosphere. There's Norway I'm taking your word for it.

No. My post was meant to be imitating a telegram. It was deliberate. If you prefer I don't wind you up about minor spelling or typographical errors then I happy to stop doing it
