Been there, done that .... One woman and her dog cross the Pennines (there's a book in that......)
Only ventured into Londonshire back in 2008 - and out again.
Agree, Northamptonshire is lovely - will check out the 14th March tomorrow.
Thanks

I was going to point out that the trouble with Northamptonshire and the Nene is that it goes up and down too quickly. In view of recent posts maybe it would not be appropriate Rog

In view of recent posts maybe it would not be appropriate Rog My route sticks to the GU until at least Braunston. Here in Northamptonshire we have an unjust reputation for going up and down too quickly. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just not as often as people would have you believe.

The persuasion continued unabated this afternoon with a string of PMs from Glyn but I resisted. Phil I have to admit I'm a bit baffled Phil. If it's not too personal Who is Glyn and what have you resisted? Glyn is the expert of the moment on all things electrical or at least on the thread about 12v fridges, he has a mate Dr Bob and they have been trying to persuade me that their way is the only way . Peterboat has also been quite active in this thread. Phil

I'm sitting on the fence somewhat in that thread... pros and cons for both sides. I'm happier when leaving the boat for 24 hours having a 12volter so I don't have the added risk of leaving the inverter on.

Dr Bob, of CWDF infamy, is an opinionated prick who needs shutting-up. Besides whatever else he spouts drivel about, he's an enthusiastic dispenser of duff (navigational) advice to the nervous and/or inexperienced, albeit one whose prophesies of doom are far more likely to result in the recipients not being exposed to unacceptably hazardous conditions or avoidable risks, but instead becoming even more nervous than they were before seeking advice, and never gaining any of the experience and confidence they're lacking in to begin with.
About a fortnight before Christmas there was a couple wanting to get their boat from Gloucester to Ripon, or as near as time and circumstances allowed, as a matter of some urgency and necessity. Posting under the name 'the Duker', I suggested the easiest and quickest route would be up the river to Worcester, then via Brum and the Bottom Road to Fazeley, and then onto the Trent at Shardlow (Derwent Mouth). Conditions on the Severn were alright for the short run up to Worcester, provided they got going quickly, before all the snow that had fallen in the Severn's catchment area melted. They would then have had 4 to 5 days of stoppage free canal work over the Christmas period to get them on to the Trent, where they would have to be very unlucky to be troubled by any after effects of the weather, whatever it did, at least as far as Keadby.
This suggestion was rubbished and dismissed, variously as bad advice and putting people at risk, by an alliance of utter pillocks with Dr Bob at the fore, all on the grounds that firstly the Severn would rise when Graham Rabies' snow (he was one of the 'Brains Trust' dishing out this crap) thawed and found it's way into the river, and on top of that, the astounding revelation that there was a possibility of some lengths of iced-up canal between Worcester and Shardlow in the middle of the Winter.
As far as I'm aware the couple, and their boat, are still down in Gloucester. There's a stoppage lasting through to late March to build a cycle path through Edgbaston Tunnel, so they no longer have that most direct, easiest route open to them, and of course C&RT's Winter stoppage program will now be closing other routes off as well. So, well done Dr Bob, and the rest of the dick-heads who succeeded in frightening these people out of what would, in fact, have been about as easy and unproblematic boat relocation as anyone could reasonably expect to have to undertake at this time of year.

I remember the thread they are a strange bunch over there at times and once the "experts" have pronounced their opinion thats it they wont reply to anything the "expert" stated so funny
