That's the Government plan - get them into Wetherspoons, cheap beer and cheap grub. Rub-a-dub-dub, the plebs are in the pub. Well, I'm glad we got a boat and got to see what it was like before it all gets turned into a Disney-Canal-Experience theme park for the wealthy Victoria Beckhams. With all this Sharia Law coming in too, I'm betting the next BSS regulations require every boat must have one prayer mat inside it.

Biggest challenge is how to turn a bit of interest in their local canal into a 'political' interest. Boaters might have to start sucking up to cyclists/walkers/fisherfolk etc. in the future.

You seem to forget that large swathes of the UK don't have a 'local' canal. I live in a part of the country where nearest canal is the best part of 60 miles away. The bulk of the system is 100 miles away. As a political priority it really isn't of any interest to the vast majority of the population. That is about the long and the short of it. Additionally most of jo public will i would wager see people 'lucky' entough to own a boat as privileged and really not in need of their support.

Many people I've worked with over the years automatically assume you must be loaded to own a boat. The fact a 50 year old cruiser isn't massively expensive to begin with and is certain to keep you poor seems to escape them. Particularly when you consider most spunk their money on useless tat and have cars on the never never it always makes me smile that the automatic assumption is boat = wedge up with the vast majority of society.

This is why talking to people about the transference of assets is good. It brings it home to them that it does effect them.

I live near Exmoor, very far from the connected system. Go into the pub and tell people I'm moving onto a narrowboat and they get really interested and start talking about all types of reminisces and practical/topical questions/issues. The pub even has the main free canal mag delivered (don't ever get into a conversation with the guy who delivers it though unless you want a long long long conversation about how many he delivers over the whole of Devon and Cornwall!). People are interested about canals just not high enough up the list for it to become political.
