what would this world be like to live in if everyone was as selfish as that? Look around you. The only thing preventing most from going on a smash-and-grab spree is the threat of punishment. Here's a cheery song about some militant environmentalists. I don't think 'most' want to go on a smash and grab in the first place. Most communities get on with eachother without the threat of punishment because they want to, not because they have to. A good example being the canals (with a few exceptions of the few of course). I think it is generally true that people are getting more selfish. Our capitalist/marketing system thrives on it. Unfortunately that's why everything is becoming more policed. It's all about control flows. More control but by fewer and fewer people.

The smash and grabbers are the companies who feed their spoils to the masses at ever decreasing prices to remain competitive. It's got to where the only way to be in many markets is to produce on a massive scale and sell dirt cheap, and it's only going to get worse for the worlds resources. The threat of punishment is all but non-existant for those that rob the earth but pay tax/bribes. What you think foreign aid is all about other than allowing UK armed forces bases/ports and UK companies to do what they'd never get away with at home? Whoops I'm being cynical again...

No honestly, there's a large-scale anthropological experiment in progress and preliminary results very much support my view. You can see it for yourself if you like. Its called 'Margate'.

Exactly the multinational corporations continue to exploit the earths resources and its population in the name of its profits. Until this changes what any of us do individually to help the situation seems to be of little consequence, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth taking action on an individual level. Because this is how grass roots change will occur. Tax the corporations who have caused the pollution to pay to put it right.

Because this is how grass roots change will occur. Tax the corporations who have caused the pollution to pay to put it right. Part of the problem does lie with individuals. People expect a high income in retirement. This usually involves having investments such as shares and the most profitable ones are often the most ugly. I don't own any shares or benefit from any whatsoever. I did when I was younger but I don't like what they were investing in. This has made me poorer financially which a lot of people think is the wrong approach. It's not a typical situation but the drive behind most of the large corporation is share holder profit. It's a bit of a bent system which relies on basic greed in the human species. Greed which overrides concern for other species or long term security of the environment everyone relies on. Humans only live for about 80 years give or take a couple of decades. This does not allow them to have a bigger picture type of view. They just take take take that's it. It won't suddenly stop. You only have to look at these huge megayachts which cost thousands of times more than most people's houses. They are often owned by hedge fund managers or investment bankers. People who feed on greed. It's a nasty situation.

People are sheep. All it takes is a cartoon which should only appeal to the mentality of a six-year old and hey presto, its someone's Dolmio day. I once spent several years in the mindset that if I could consciously remember something being advertised I wouldn't buy it. This is a very difficult way to live, but refusing to watch telly helps. But in the end I gave in. The crap gets cheaper because capitalism is a system of diminishing returns and the margins have to be squeezed to maintain shareholder interest. It is easier to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine the end of capitalism. Which is handy.

I don't know if I have ever been affected by advertising, having generally borne a cynical attitude towards most everything. It's usually a process of sifting through much dross before making a decision to purchase an item. Some bad choices I'm sure, but then experience gives you the warning, and the old saying 'a pessimist is simply an optimist with experience' rings true.
Can anyone here think of being persuaded by adverts to buy that product? Nothing comes to my mind. But a lot of TV adverts are well made and worth watching for their entertainment value and catchy music.

It's not a new product and you were persuaded. It was more of a reminder. I shall have a think of this and look at some adverts and think if they have ever affected me (if I remember). Also to be not counted are friends' recommendations, not reviews from net sites, as that is not advertising sprung upon you. I miss most TV ads anyway as I don't watch much TV anyway these days (not much on that's worth watching) and when the advert runs come on I go off to do something else until the film/programme continues.

An interesting discussion but everyone speaks as if the human race was something separate and not involving them.
Advertising happens because it works ... they wouldn't spend the money otherwise.
We are the consumers.
The fact I don't own shares doesn't mean I'm not affected by the system everyday, in every way.

You used the new TfL Rail from LHR to Paddington at a vastly increased cost. Why? and how did you hear about the service?

I was so envious of anyone with one of the first generation PCs partly because there was not a chance in hell I was going to get one. So when the IBM x86 generation happened, I was in love. Couldn't upgrade fast enough. And as for computer games...there was no limit. But it wore off eventually, thank gods.

You used the new TfL Rail from LHR to Paddington at a vastly increased cost. Why? and how did you hear about the service? It's about £10.40 with the TfL Elizabeth Line one person Heathrow to Paddington, and £3.10 by Piccadilly Line and then some other Underground line to Paddington. We had seen these new trains, from our trains' windows, parked up at Stoke-on-Trent two or three years ago and I wondered what they were. They had Elizabeth Line already painted on their sides. Within these past few months I looked up 'Elizabeth Line' and watched a couple of YouTube videos and saw there was this new link service - OK, using the Heathrow Express rails, but a cheaper alternative as it stops about 6 times. Heathrow express is about £22 each way - an obscene rip-off, but, hey, that means nothing if someone else is paying for your ticket! I can't say I've seen any adverts anywhere for this new TfL service. Pirkko isn't overly keen on being in tunnels/underground and as we had just 2 hours to get from Heathrow to our train at Paddington I thought we could try this new surface route which takes just 30 minutes into Paddington and that of course is handy as that's where the GWR trains to Reading & beyond leave from. We ended up with an hour spare at Paddington, which was OK as it was interesting exploring the station (discovered the pub upstairs too! - looks OK - does 'proper pub meals') and gave us time for us to collect our several sets of tickets from the machine. Will we use it again? Depends on what train we have booked out of Paddington. The ride is smoother than the Piccadilly tracks which throw the trains all over the place, the seats looked cleaner. Not this time though as, for a change of scenery, we're going to Waterloo. I don't think Pirkko has ever taken a train from there. Going via Salisbury and Westbury and Pewsey. Just for fun. We're on holiday. If South Western Railways are running any trains that is!! Guards on strike... ??!! Another surface route is the Hammersmith Metropolitan line via Portobello Road to Paddington which provides views of Grenfell Tower, and we have been on that a couple of times, but you have to change stations at Hammersmith and buy new tickets. London Waterloo. Choo choo!
