Breaking news is that the Manila lockdown is to continue till 20th May so I won't be seeing Sam Senior for ages. Dreading his hotel bill. He seems to be safe where he is, in good spirits too. I suspect that the cleaner is offering other services, he has a giggle in his voice whenever I ask about her. Randy old bugger, can't blame him. The Philippines' have a very low infection and death rate considering the population numbers, being lots of isolated islands must help. But Metro Manila has a massive population, some in poor living conditions, and can be somewhat lawless at times. I can only hope for the best. Cebu Pacific Air are taking bookings again so there will be planes but internationally flights are still very restricted.

Sam is still trapped in the Philippines, there seems to be no end to this lockdown. Flightradar24 is still showing few planes taking off from any airport and going international. There is a Qatar flight to Doha and the odd flight to Hong Kong [useless, as you have to be a HK resident to board] Some domestic flights are beginning soon I think. As he is safe and comfortable where he is, the cleaner is still looking after him, he is staying put till he can use his Emirates return flight. His hotel bill is unbelievable, he may have to do a runner. His credit card is exhausted and goes out of date this month so I suppose it will be down to me. I have already told him he is not to book a flight to the UK for his "domestic helper". He will not be able to quarantine either if that becomes necessary. The local economy is on its knees, no tourists, little transport, travel between the islands restricted. Almost all hotels are closed. But food is OK, still getting San Miguel beer and Tanduay rum. He seems to have made a few new friends, he always does. He is very sociable especially when he is abroad. The local Police call into the hotel regularly to check up and one of them took him home to dinner one night. I think I will have him down to the 'Special' clinic when he gets back.............................

Thank you Patty. He is a survivor, should be OK. Its his lady friend that scares the hell out of me. He sent a rather poor photo', she looks "nice" but young. She may have a huge family, the rule out there is take the girl and feed the whole family. Good to know someone cares..................

Strange to say but I was thinking of your dad yesterday. He has been beastly and particularly rude to me, so there is no love lost (sorry!), but I have wondered how the situation has gone. I have already told him he is not to book a flight to the UK for his "domestic helper". What? After all she has done for him?
He will not be able to quarantine either if that becomes necessary. £1,000 fine then. Required as of Monday, quarantine for 14 days - although, apparently, you are allowed to go shopping! And go to Barnard Castle if you need a pair of glasses.

Another update on the escape of the old man from Manila.
There are now a small number of Cebu Pacific flights out of Manila but international flights are still severely restricted. He needs a flight to Bangkok to meet up with his Emirates flight to Dubai and on to Manchester. Emirates are starting to schedule flights but as yet I can't see him getting out of Manila anytime soon.
His "obliging room lady" is now described as a "companion", its getting seriously worrying. I have told him in no uncertain terms that there will not be another ticket bought, she will not get a visa for the UK anyway but may be she will be allowed into Thailand with him. I hope not, its another complication I can do without.
Got an e-note from my superior this week, I'm still on home pay rates, they seem to want to get some value from me. Had to phone them, they are too busy to phone me. Laughingly she told me that my next posting could/would/might be Hong Kong. There was a trace of a laugh in the voice and a guffaw in the background. I was not amused but really have no choice where they send me. Perils of the civil service roving information gatherer. They have me doing odd research enquiries, terrible frustrating phoning folks, spending hours waiting on the lines listening to Covid messages and all the reasons why there is no one to speak to anyway. I was expecting to be sent somewhere in the Eurozone to finalise the departure of the UK but after the ultimatums from HM government and the back pedalling of the EU it seems I am least likely to be needed.
Dad seems in good spirits, he is setting up a local guy [ likely related to the "companion" ] as a dried fish seller. The poor sods out there have nothing to fall back on, there is no safety net or chance of work. Hotels most all shut, tourism nil. Judging by his food and drink bill which I have had to pay San Miguel Brewery are still doing a good trade. The Holiday Inn have been very helpful, he has done a few odd jobs for them and supervised workmen repairing the hotel pool and the plumbing in some of the rooms so they have put his room, which is very nice, onto a monthly staff rate, without being asked. Still dreading the bill though. Paid 15,000 Peso for April, about £240. May & June should be less than that now. Suppose it is very reasonable for a double hotel room, London prices it is not.
Its a waiting game with the airlines for now, and I suppose he will have to quarantine when he gets back too.

If Dad wants to replace his 'room companion' L A Café in Manila is highly recommended. All you have to do it buy a large pitcher of beer, instant company is guaranteed. More than that, it's one of the few places when companionship is free or at least, it always was every time I went there. The girl always seems to be called Sue which is strange, but there you go.
