How long has she had the boat? Well, there is a lot to learn. I wrote a guide in case we ever lent our boat to friends/relatives and it comes to 7 pages of A4. And then I keep a 'service history' list - with another list of 'current situation' on the wall below starter panel which has relevant info to remind myself eg. when fuel filter was last changed, how many spare fuel filters we have, when was engine oil changed, when was gearbox oil changed, etc. We also have a comprehensive A-Z list of Where Things Are so that if I want to know where the fuel filters are I look up F (for fuel filters) and then I am reminded of where they are. You laugh - but - where are the split pins, eh? Foxy looks up S for split pins and then knows where they are! J for Jubilee clips - yes - found! How about weed hatch tape - where was that last? Duct tape, cable ties, Allen keys, Lift-a-Dots, snow brush, toothbrushes (for cleaning things), water pump impellers, fuses, chisels (which toolbox?)..... I'd rather go boating.

As in 'glowplugs' I'm guessing. Has she never done that before? Has she never started the engine from cold before? I once went over to see if I could help a boy and his girlfriend - their car wouldn't start. When I looked at how shitty the engine was, just filth everywhere, I thought 'why bother? - there will be something wrong with just about everything else in that dark and dismal dungeon, and they have made no attempt to keep it clean and serviced'. Some people do no maintenance at all and expect things to run forever. As with the fuel filter - not changed since 2013?! Yes glowplugs if you like. Do keep up! She has only recently bought the boat and mentioned that she had never actually started the engine herself, someone else had done it. She had it serviced because the fuel filter hadn’t been changed since 2013 etc. Perhaps a TB member would like to pop over and run through her boat, check everything, and make a list of how things work, and what needs to be done. In a spirit of good will, like. Or someone from CWDF?

I am reminded of the CWDF lady who went off in a huff and painted her boat all over in blacking, including all over her mushrooms. I forget her name. We passed her boat outside Skipton in June 2017. Has it passed the BSS I wonder... Mad Max

So what is the difference between what you were doing, and what you did to get it to start? 18 units of alcohol maybe? And kris wins with this ^ ^ ^ I'm still laughing thanks. Rog

I previously had a Boatmaster Licence" Rag and stick boater. Bet she knows how to park a boat without blue string tho'.

Bet she knows how to park a boat without blue string tho'. Most rag and string boats have an engine for coming into harbour and parking them up! When I sailed in the 90s we could still sail into harbour but dont know if you can today? to many very expensive gin palaces around I suspect

Rag and stick boater. Bet she knows how to park a boat without blue string tho'. Planning a trip to Ripon from Goole? And yet hasn't worked out how to start her engine (as of yesterday anyway). I thought the Ouse was something to be reckoned with... I've traversed it 4 times, survived. If a clown can do it?

Going up to Ripon isn’t a big deal provided you do when the conditions are benign. And to be fair, it hasn’t rained much recently. Dunno about the tides though. Tidal Ouse is a bit boring with high banks but further up beyond York, it’s quite pleasant as rivers go. Much nicer than eg the Severn. The tidal bit only takes about 3 hrs iirc. And you can make a good speed along it, like 8mph when you hit the right bit of flow!

I think the "going to Ripon" was perhaps a bit of bravado, and quite likely really just wanted to pop out and sit on the VM for the duration. Maybe tried to check on CRT's emergency call line if it would be free for her to do just that.
Nothing wrong with sitting towpath and I agree less likely to be infected by nasty neighbours, but I reckon the "bugger boris" I'll do what I want attitude pissed off more than a few, especially those who want nothing more than the ending of the pandemic and to be able to go to their own boats.

luck....sheer bloody luck I've seen Robbie Cummings' trip report of going up from Selby to the first lock - he seemed rather concerned. It didn't really interest us. MJG mentioned it and I did look into going to Ripon, but we decided it wasn't our thing as the Ouse is boring anyway with high banks and nothing to see. Is 'socks' planning to go out of Goole and turn left? She could simply go straight on, turn left at Spurn Head, and head for the North Pole where she could 'self-isolate'. I expect she will just end up moaning about the polar bears and penguins. socks' new neighbours No penguins at the North Pole...

With one cylinder and 10hp Yes I would think most boats can manage 4 or 5 mph through very deep water, add 3 or 4 mph of current...
