We lived in Wales 1975-1979.
We had a farm call Sychpant. Dry ditch I think it means. Hippy and well moneyed English twat parents. It's a Christian retreat now called Ffald-y-Brenin. Cwm Gwaun, the Gwine valley in English. Lovely place actually.
My clearest memory at 5 years old of our nightmare farm was the crows pecking the eyes out of a living sheep in the field. Sort of thing you don't forget. All the blood going down its face. Not ideal. Crows looked happy about it though.
One of our neighbours was John Seymour the self sufficiency idiot who did some books.
What a twat.

Perhaps that's a good thing.

What a twat. John Seymour was certainly not a twat. His books helped me enormously when I owned a farm in South Brazil.

I think mm may, or has read a lot of books, and as a result often tends to see himself as one of the characters within them.

Go visit in the winter...
I love Barmouth but there is no way I'd live there.
Winter's when the surf's up I'm curious, why wouldn't you live there? Always found it very parochial and dreary/sleepy during the long winter months.

Funny how you would assume this as it is completely inaccurate. Last time I read a book was probably about 30 years ago. I never read any fiction at all or watch films as it happens. Our neighbour was John Seymour, my mother knew him and saw him try and slaughter a pig. In real life, not in a book. This happened. I know it sounds made up but it isn't. He knew how to write books but had no idea how to actually deal with turning livestock into food.

Barmouth is lovely ... the place is sleepy in winter when all the tourists stay away, but still beautiful.

Forgot to mention it is full of old people visiting and saying how lovely and beautiful it is even when it's cold wet miserable and someone has to tell them which way the beach is and where the hills would be if only the low cloud wasn't hiding them!
I spent two winters in N. Wales, one mainly at Harlech...

It's funny my 2 favourite areas in the UK are Cornwall and Snowdonia.

Barmouth is sounding good! I'll join the sailing club, no doubt make friends through fishing/ surfing, and there should be a steady stream of visitors during the summer months, maybe some opportunities for 'socialising' Just need to decide, do I wait a couple of years and look to do a bit of work there from time to time, or wait till closer to pension time. Hmmm.
