Stabby, you could be right. Santa gave me a bottle of Japanese whisky for Christmas because I drank too much scotch whisky trying to find one I likedπ Happy New year, Bamber (Swindon) so is Japanese whisky nicer than Scottish?....or does it slow consumption of Whisky?...if so I'll buy it next time for son in law when he's here cos he's always emptying whatever malt I have in. Apparently, the Japanese have beat the scots in most of the recent taste comparisons and are now said to produce the best whisky in the world. Personally I wouldn't rate it above a good malt, however at 51.4% proof it had its good points π. OTOH, big setback was it came in a 50cl bottle.

There's a real proper whisky shop in Highworth near Swindon. Perhaps it's just me but Swindon has never struck me as the natural epicentre for connoisseurs of Scotch whisky. Christmas is coming early in our house as this year our son and family are coming home from China on the tenth and going back on Boxing day. So we decided to have Xmas day on the 17th so that the kids still have a full week to break all the crap plastic toys (made in China) rather than having to do it in a single day π. So it'll all be over for us while everyone else are still out fighting in the supermarkets. I'm actually quite looking forward to it.

For the past 15 years I have winterised my boat by fully draining the water tank, run the pump until nothing comes out of any of the taps and removing the shower head. Leave the boat with all taps fully open. This has been successful and I've never had a problem. This year we moved to a more pleasant site and plan to spend a few weekends on the boat sat in the marina. Question is how do you go about a 'Partial winterisation.? Would I get away with leaving the tank half full, level below the waterline, turn off the main water valve, and just drain the taps as usual? I have mains hook up but don't really want to leave heaters running unattended for long periods.

No solar panels fitted. Good point about the voltage but I won't be back on board for a couple weeks to check it. However, bearing in mind that the SG display is only accurate to 50mV, and the alternator charge voltage indications appear normal, I don't think it can be that far out. Cheers....

Just an observation from a marina based leisure cruiser --
My boat is very basic. 3x 110Ahr leisure batteries, no inverter, and primary loads being a Shoreline 12V fridge, TV for maximum 4 hrs a day, LED lights with usual use of water pump/shower pump. I've had a SmartGauge fitted for a few years and always found it useful although I've always taken its indications with a pinch of salt for the first couple days out on a trip.
However, I had a new set of leisure batteries fitted about 6 weeks ago and now things have got a bit 'interesting.' I've just done a three week cruise with relatively short days but the battery voltage has been around 12.8V - 12.9V each day before setting off. I stayed in Oxford for 2 days and only ran the engine for 1/2 hour to get some hot water and the voltage was still 12.65 volts on the third morning. The SG capacity indications are (not surprisingly) all over the place, seldom dropping below 97% (even at 12.65V) except that one morning it went down to 91% while voltage still indicating 12.85V! I know the manual says the SG won't be accurate until the battery is taken below 60% a couple times but without adding some substantial additional load this not going to happen for a long time with my usual cruising pattern. Just another of those 'first world' problems I suppose!
