Given your connectivity issues this may not be all that great a suggestion but...I bought a brand-new twin-sim 4g unlocked phone for only £40 on t'web. I very much doubt you'll get a deal like that in a high street shop. But you should be able to buy some kind of unlocked phone easily enough. However your sim may not be active...ask the network... I used the online chat to ask for help, they wanted me to put my sim in another phone, but I don't have another phone. I don't think I have a connectivity issue as such, as I've been on this mooring for a few weeks and the phone has worked as a phone up til today. There are three lights onthe mifi, and I am using it to post this message on my laptop. I discovered the tablet is just some sort of oversize phone, rather than a laptop type computer, so I keep my spreadsheets and docs on here, and the tablet is more or less redundant, as well as being faulty. I was un able to connect to the net with my phone for about two weeks, after I ran out of monthly data allowance, but now I should be back up and running, but it just would not connect to wifi. The tablet seems to have an unrelated problem which makes it unuseable. Not sure how to proceed as I don't want to go to a THREE shop with all the risk of disease and I can't get the technical people to contact me, it seems.

I will go in to the village tomorrow, to try a different area, but I think I've broken both the tablet (not me, but gremlins), and the phone (which decided to stop being a phone this morning), after the remedy suggested by THREE which was pressing the volume to max and the on-off simultaneously made things worse. I removed the sim card and tried another one, but the phone is just refusing to connect to the phone company. I will try the chat again tomorrow. Really inconvenient I think there is an EE Shop locally, but not a THREE. There are repair shops, should I try them?

Again, its hard to assess hardware faults remotely. Put yer mask on... Yes, an android tablet functions in much the same way as an android phone. The ones which are also phones are sometimes referred to as 'phablets'. Try looking at 'settings/more/tethering and mobile hotspot' and ensure 'mobile wi-fi hotspot' is enabled (mind you I'm assuming you are attempting to use it in connection with a laptop you mentioned). Also in the same menu where 'tethering and mobile hotspot' appears, there is a heading called 'mobile networks' - check that the 'data enabled' setting is in fact enabled... Don't have any other usefull suggestions...

Really inconvenient I think there is an EE Shop locslly, but not a THREE. There are repair shops, should I try them? Really sorry to hear you're having problems, but bear in mind it's not you that has failed in any sense, it's the gear. Its worth reiterating what a few people have said- you cannot cancel a phone contract by simply not paying. Please DO NOT do that, at least not until you've discussed the issue with them. Refusing to pay is kind of breaching the contract terms, and they will just end up taking you to court for the outstanding amount, and you will also get hit for costs etc. The stress and hassle of a legal action will be far more than that of just calling them, or visiting a shop, and getting it sorted that way. Its a pain but it has to be done as the first approach. If they cannot resolve your problems in a reasonable time then you could consider writing a letter stating that they have breached the contract, and for that reasonyou are stopping payment, but that could still be legally disputed- and tbh it shouldn't come to that- that is the last resort. The first thing to do is to call them, or visit a shop. There's a chance the shop staff can do something to help- maybe take it off your hands and get it send off for repair. Also, you should remind them that it is their legal obligation- as the company who sold you the phone and tablet- to fix them or else give you replacements. You are not obliged to send them to the manufacturer- your contact is with Three, they sort out the details of how it gets fixed. Make a written record of every contact you make with them- if you chat online, you can get a copy of the chat text and save that. If you phone, keep a record of times/dates, the gist of the call, and the name and rank of the person you spoke to. Take this log into the shop, make a point of showing it the person you speak to, and ask for their name(s) and job title, and record those as well. I can't even begin to guess whats caused the phone and tablet failures, although since they were working at first, it doesnt seem to me like a SIM/network issue, but maybe hardware faults. Who knows- but either way, they are contractually obliged to provide you with a working phone and service, plus a tablet- and you need to stay in their faces until they fulfil their obligations. At this stage it is 100% their responsibility to get that phone working- so do not let a repairer anywhere near it, or you may invalidate the warranty terms somehow. I would consider moving the boat towards the nearest 3 shop, or to a transport link that gets you there, because you may need to make a few visits. I think there is a 'cooling off' period for phone contracts (is it 7 days?), within which you can cancel if everything is unused, but it sounds as if the cooling off option is no longer available to you.

I've had the tablet for four months, and it worked OK for three months then it fills up with data, sends a message, I deleted data, it fills up, sends message and repeat, sounds like a virus, but it's unusable.
I did try to phone THREE them a week or so ago about the tablet, but never got to to technical. Now I have no phone. I either have to post the phone and tablet somewhere, or try to find a store, which is not easy, I'm out in the sticks. The cost of a taxi and a rail fair would be about £40, and I'm not convinced they could sort it on site. Posting the items should be quicker and cheaper, I'll see if that is posible. I don't think either problem is easily fixable, but usually when you go to a shop they have some solution, if only selling you something (eg the tablet!). I get the impression that sometimes you have a known bug, so they go in to the back shop and give you an update of the software. Not that they would admit it is a fault in your version. I'll have to get them to set up the direct debits again, reluctantly.

Morning Martin, I'm at Clayworth, trying to keep away from Retford which is a hot spot for crowds at the moment. GOOD NEWS the phone has come back to normal, so it must have been a network problem, pity the providers never confess to problems, fortunately the phone seems to hsve survived my random 'pin' jabbing. Now to try adjusting 'settings' to get my wifi on phone enabled. Panic now over ..... It's ridiculous we can no longer function normally without connectivity, but I don't think I would have bought a boat and cc..d etc etc without these essential lifelines. I would think that applies to lots of liveaboards. Jo

Call three times, get three different answers.

I think there are a few hard core folks who are fine with a book/kindle and a few terrestrial TV channels, but like you I really dont like being without a connection (although there have been only one or two nights so far haven't had one). I think in my case my addiction to the internet is basically because I've lost the ability to read, think, or entertain myself (as I used to do quite well back in the pre internet days). The sad result is all too plain. Last night I somehow stumbled across a youtube channel about a rural US householder who feeds a pack of chipmunks, and I spent half an hour watching chipmunks being lured forth and fed by hand. That got me onto the raccoon whisperer... No good will come of this- I can't pretend its a good thing that I need chipmunk videos, but there it is. My sanity would be far better served with a good old fashioned novel, or a biography or something. But I've turned into a complete airhead. It all about the chipmunks these days. And the raccoons. Because why not.

Here ya go, Tony - why not get one as a pet? Raccoons are for Christmas not just life! Leave it in Waitrose when you've had enough. In the fruit & veg section. A fellow raccoon fancier, perchance? Tis a noble creature indeed...

Not a brindle like Tiger at the drydock ? Iincidentally Tiger is still alive, healthy and well fed ...... especially when you consider she is fed cat food every evening plu she scrounges sandwiches and other treats from the workforce and scoffs anything that's going, chips with curry sauce, ham sandwiches with mustard, chinese, sausage rolls, biscuits, cake .... you name it and she'll eat it. Without doubt the friendliest cleanest and most likeable "feral" cat I have ever come across

Yes there's a widely publicized outage of Google on Tuesday. I had an issue with Gmail but not a problem as I also have Outlook I've always had 2 email accounts, as it's possible I thought it made sense. Thinking about it I have 3 email accounts as does Chris Phil

Thinking about it I have 3 email accounts as does Chris Phil I counted up and for some reason I have 9 email accounts..some my kids set up, then a counsellor, then a shop when I brought a computer I use 2/3 of them...I guess the others have quietly filled up with all those rubbish emails and some specific to who ever set them up Have no idea as to passwords..they are probably in that scrappy notebook that stores passwords... Maybe if I get really fed up one day I could check....or perhaps I'll watch paint dry or read all Foxys posts.........
