When I worked it IT we used to assign a laptop to a user and give it a three year life, desktops five years.
So four years is about right really for a home user.

I think they wouid last longer if we didn't get drawn into updates all of the time. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Updates also slow down your machine over time which makes people feel forced to buy a new faster machine every 3-4 years. My Acer laptop lasted about 10 years but I did have to rebuild the hard drive every couple of years when I ran Windows to remove the crap it had aquired (mainly due to updates). Things got better when I switched to Ubuntu (Linux). I still avoid updating that too. If you are into high spec gaming, Ubuntu is probably not an option though. For Office, internet, email, video, music, it's fine.

Pc's need updating, you don't have to do it of course, but they you leave yourself open and shouldn't really complain if you get hacked.
Tech changes, fast, and to keep a laptop for ten years is nuts in my opinion.

You might have to download it differently on a hp but it will work.
HP make some great chromebooks much cheaper than their laptop versions.

It was the simplicity of the machine. Was a little childish, so ill apologise. Not offended Re laptop, I play bridge online, and watch the racing, so a good screen is important, I usually kill computers off after about 4 years as by that time the new software is gas guzzling, also random mishaps. The little tablet from Huawei is fine for both of above, but I keep my spreadsheets on a computer, avoid clouds and stuff. PS just got an invoice with a. docx, not sure if I need something to look at it. Update on. Docx it opens with an app, first time I've found something useful. Another update, Three are sending me a new sim card, so when that arrives, I'll try it in the current phone, it will either work properly, or it won't, tx all Jo
And my last phone came from www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/, a grade A refurbishment which was perfect, just didn't have a charger with it.

When I worked in IT we had one portable in the whole Company, it was the size of a Singer Sewing machine, and had to get a written authorisation to by-pass the X ray machine at the airport. I think what I need here is a fast CPU, a good sharp screen, and a machine that I can set up as a TV and as a computer, ie with a keyboard for the occasional serious use, but which will sit on a side table so I can watch TV. I dont like that stupid Bing bling. PS Im not going to spend more than necessary, ie £299 max.

OK, after yet another kerfuffle, I've got everything working, though the Three MiFiRouter has got a broken 'gate',the metal slider bit that holds the sim card in firmly, not sure if this was the route(!) of the trouble. So, my new Hafury phone is a bit of a mystery, the top page, you might cal it 'desktop page' no longer has a phone symbol. I'm pretty sure it used to have a phone symbol. What seens to have happened is that I have created folders, and phone is now more difficult to access, it's in a folder alongside 'contacts', maybe it is this way to prevent accidentsl phone calls if it gets put in my pocket.

My current laptop is a Tosiba L706 i5 processor 4gb ram 500gig hdd.Since windows 10 it has become frustratingly slow! Yesterday I put a 1TB crucial ssd in to replace the hdd and swapped the ram out for 8gb.
Wow it’s like shit of a shovel, didn’t even put a clean install of Win10 in just copied the old hdd to the new ssd, It’s gone from 3mins+ to start up to 27seconds!!
why throw perfectly good stuff away when you can upgrade/recycle? the above upgrades cost less than£150 and will give it another 5years at least...

I have a Toshiba laptop, its started to slow right down, I may chuck an SSD in it to see if speeds it up, have wiped and installed fresh windows but still painfully slow.
I have an SSD in my gaming pc, from pressing power to being able to open a programme, with tapping in the pass code, its 30 seconds, lovely!
