Growing good mj is not as easy as it sounds. Growing outside means exposure to pests and thieves, whilst growing inside requires space and a lot of electricity. It's legal to distill your own spirits for personal consumption, but few people do it because it simply isn't practical. It's easier, and often less expensive, to just buy it. The same goes for pot. I once grew pot for the medical marijuana industry and it's an exact horticultural sciense, and a PITA. I can grow really good pot, but I don't bother. It's much easier to just buy it. I did read somewhere that there is so much cannabis grown in the UK that we are now a net exporter, and that vehicles are searched for it at Dover on the way out. Certainly everybody I know who smokes it smokes home-grown weed, cannabis resin which for decades was the standard article is very rare in the UK now. How many of those grow it themselves? Most of the weed sol in England is indeed grown in homes, but usually not by the end user. Most of it is grown by the sellers who dedicate whole rooms and a lot of time to it. It isn't just a case of sticking some seeds in a pot, it is time consuming and requires constant attention along with horticultural knowledge. I know plenty of smokers who have tried to grow and failed miserably.

Call me racist, but if I had a house to rent out and some Vietnamese people phoned up about it, I would tell them to fuck right off.

This isn't personal, and it may sound cruel, but millions of people worldwide smoke mj my with no ill effects. Do you think it is fair to condemn hundreds of thousands of those people to live in cages just because of what happened to your loved one? Alcohol ruins far more lives than mj. Should you be made to spend years in a cage just because you enjoy an occasional drink? Should the clerk at the liquor store be forced to live in a cage for selling you beer? Yes make it illegal, you wont get any sympathy from me if you feel caged, there is generaly no reason that a human needs to smoke dope, there are some that need canaboids(sp) for medicinal reasons but that has no THC. There is generally no reason that a human needs to do most of the things we do for pleasure.

There has been a lot of sense talked here and a bit of ill informed but earnestly uttered nonsense. The most potentially harmful aspect of cannabis use to the average user is its illegality. I have a criminal record for something silly I did 25 odd years ago that will never go away which has had a huge effect on my employability/career prospects. I have had, and continue to enjoy trusted positions in my working life because I have a large network of professional friends who know me well and trust my professional approach, but at one time I couldn't get any job that required a CRB check, my confidence was shot, and still is to a certain extent. I still would be passed over were I to apply for a position 'cold' that required a CRB. Thankfully I don't have to.

Certainly everybody I know who smokes it smokes home-grown weed, cannabis resin which for decades was the standard article is very rare in the UK now. I can't claim to know how things are in the UK, but typically, when mj is illegal, that is how the "industry" operates. What you have are not so much amateurs growing weed, but rather smaller "mom and pop" style commercial growers. As mj becomes legal, larger commercial operations take over because of the economics. Here in the US, my legalization has been an evolution, rather than sudden change. First a state will legalize medical mj, which means just about anyone can get it. Then, a few years later, when people see that all the hysteria about pot was nothing but hysteria, and they start looking at the tax and social benefits of legalizing mj, they legalize it for recreational use. Washington and Oregon states recently legalized mj. Prior to legalization both states had HUGE illegal mj industries, composed, to a large part, of small home-grow operations. Both those states fit well into your hypothesis, so it will be interesting to see how things work out in a few years.

Please, try not to be so obtuse. First of all, I don't feel caged. Law enforcement authorities put real people in real cages (prisons) for doing less harm to society than you and your fellow drinkers do. There's no reason you need to drink, and it is obscene that you would imprison other human beings for doing nothing less than what you do on a regular basis. Secondly, Medical Marijuana has THC. I know because I used to grow it. Marinol, the synthetic mj substitute, does not contain THC, but neither does it contain many of the cannabinoids that natural mj contains and it lacks the efficacy of natural mj. Lastly, you should be aware that the human rights of the other 7.39999 billion people on this planet are dependent on neither your sympathy nor your approval.

Possibly the best option at this point is that we all have some chamomile tea.

Good on you. An hour ago I thought you were a twat. I'm very sad that intelligent posters can turn an argument into a quarrel by accident. It is so hard to convey an opinion without coming over patronising or sanctimonious. At least the Mods haven't banned us! Mea culpa PG.
There is something about the internet that seems to turn me and others into bigots. A bigot is someone with a conceit that I do not entertain. Who said that?
Anyway PG2 keep posting and arguing, it is good for me.

What makes you think that I am a drinker? My favourite from the age of 21 to 42 was Cocaine, another drug that is not physically adictive, should that be made legal?

If it had been legal, would you and your wife have behaved any differently? It seems to me it was already illegal and didn't stop either of you, yet you think they should be illegal. I can't understand how you artived at your position.

My EX-wife s not the only person I have known to slide down that slope. I have never smoked, just can't understand taking substances that slow you down.
